He claimed to "feel bad" for them and set them free upon his death but really its bullshit cause if he really cared he would have se them free decades earlier. He just didn't want to live without slaves Also he used to transport slaves back and forth between different properties he owned so he could follow a law at the time that said that slaves who stayed in one location for a certain period of time would automatically become free.
