A Loveland man faces felony charges after allegedly concluding that two men going door-to-door in his neighborhood were members of the protest movement known as Antifa and then ordering them to the ground and holding them at gunpoint, 9Wants to Know has learned.

The incident unfolded after the man called police, said there were two men wearing masks near his home, and announced he was armed and going to go confront them, Loveland Police Lt. Bob Shaffer confirmed to 9Wants to Know.

When officers arrived in the 2400 block of Dawn Court around 6 p.m. Thursday, they encountered Scott Gudmundsen dressed in fatigues and holding two men on the ground at gunpoint, Shaffer said.

But the men werent troublemakers they work for a local roofing company and were wearing blue polo shirts with the firms name on them, shorts, tennis shoes and white surgical-style masks, Shaffer said.

One of them is a Colorado State University football player who is 20 years old and works part-time at the roofing company. The student is a "man of color," according to a statement from the university.

The other man is 27 and an employee of the roofing company, 9Wants to Know has learned. 9NEWS is not identifying them at this point because they were described by police as victims of a crime.

They were canvassing the neighborhood because of the recent hail storms, Shaffer told 9Wants to Know.

There was no evidence that either of the men did anything wrong.

Nothing at all, Shaffer said.

At the scene, police arrested Gudmundsen, 65, who lives around the corner from where police encountered him.

Gudmundsen was armed with two weapons, Shaffer told 9Wants to Know: A Glock pistol, and a second Glock pistol that had been converted into a longer weapon that looked like a carbine rifle.

Police seized both guns as evidence, Shaffer said.

The incident unfolded in a southwest Loveland neighborhood a few blocks west of Thompson Valley High School.

Shaffer said that Gudmundsen called police, said there were two Antifa guys in the neighborhood and that, I am going out there to confront them. Gudmundsen told police in the call he was armed and wearing tactical gear, Shaffer said.

A second person also called police around the same time and said a man in fatigues was holding two people on the ground at gunpoint in the street.

President Trump has suggested that Antifa agitators have been responsible for recent demonstrations across the country calling for greater police accountability in use-of-force incidents.

According to Larimer County Jail records, Gudmundsen was booked at 6:14 p.m. Thursday on suspicion of two counts of felony menacing and two counts of false imprisonment.

He is scheduled to be in court June 18. A man who said he was his son, Stanley Gudmundsen, emailed 9NEWS and said his father is ill and currently undergoing treatment at a mental health facility.

As much as the guy is mentally ill, its an acceptable kind of mentally ill in this country and there is actually a large group who encourage it.

very easily could have been another Trayvon Martin or Ahmoud Arbery

I used to oppose the whole concept of "an armed society is a polite society" as right wing garbage (and as they present it it still is because what they really mean is that if all white people are armed then they'll be safe from minorities).

Now though, fuck it. If these clowns are going to be walking around playing citizen's arrest hero, people need to be armed to protect themselves.

that's the exact fucking opposite of what needs to be done. we need to take guns away, not give more of the damn things out. one of the underlying reasons the police force is so over-equipped and prone to violence is the overabundance of guns.

There is no way you can remove guns from America right now. There are everywhere and easy to get ahold of. No law would stop anyone whp wants one from getting one.

deweaponizing the country would take over a decade, that doesn't mean the correct alternative is to give more guns to everyone and hope wild west justice is good justice. you think police shootings are bad now? well triple gun ownership in the country and you'll see what bad really looks like...

And there would be open protests and violence about it from tens of millions of people.

Over 100 million Americans own guns. There are billions of guns in America and more being made every day, even more coming in from Mexico.

And 3D printers exist that get better at creating firearms everyweek as a problem for the future.

The only possible way guns would ever "Go away" in America is if near enough the entire population opposed them. And they don't

• restrict access to concealed carry permits.
• make open carry illegal.
• require registration of all guns.
• mandate a full background check, maybe even a psych evaluation.
• if you're found in possession of an unregistered gun, you go to jail for a decent amount of time.
• block private sale of guns without legal transfer of ownership/registration.
• jail private sellers found in violation.
• force owners to report "stolen" weapons, if they dont then jail them for any crimes committed with those guns.

Gun violence has been on a downward trend since long before the militarization of the police. Police have always been prone to violence, everyone just has video cameras to catch it now.
Militarization of the police happened because the feds needed to recoup some money from all their excess gear and decided that PDs would be good customers.

first off, you'll notice i said one of the reasons.

second, its cases like this that support my statement. cops across the country saw this event and others like it and decided the best way to do their job was with bigger guns.

I don't disagree with the sentiment, that shit was fucking wild. It was also a massive outlier at the time so the reaction was a wild kneejerk. Nor do I oppose the majority of reforms that you suggested in your other post.

I'm not of the "good guy with a gun" mentality where I think it's a good idea for people in bad situations to shoot it out with criminals. Without proper training trying to take on an armed criminal in a Wal-Mart, bank [insert crowded space here] is actually inviting more carnage. I do believe that Ahmaud Arbery or Trayvon Martin been armed they might still be alive, whereas now they absolutely dead. Either through the ability to defend themselves from the extrajudicial actions of their fellow citizens or those citizens being like "maybe we shouldn't fuck with this guy, we'll just wait till the cops arrive". That means of course that you have to have a police force whose immediate response isn't "fuck that guy is armed, let's blast him".
