I heard people describe the Dark Side as this corrupting, cancerous thing, and not just a matter of morality, and it'd be difficult to convey characters skirting that line

but I only really know based on what I saw from the movies, so I'm pretty ignorant on much of the franchise

Yeah, its definitely murder when its a genocidal dictator obsessed with the literal embodiment of evil

Its easiest to stick to pure good and pure evil even if its unrealistic.

Because a central theme in Star Wars is how the dark side is an addictive and corrupting force

Jedi don't get to be evil some of the time.

I like it more the way Kotor did things. The Jedi are basically emotionless while being Sith you embrace your emotions. This makes Sith like a dictatorship. There is nothing inherently evil or wrong about it, but overwhelmingly the majority of people who become one were complete assholes to begin with or didn't last long until they did become one. Hence there is nothing wrong with the Sith embracing their emotions, but overwhelmingly the majority who do were already evil or they just gave in to their anger completely eventually.

Grey Jedi seems like an easy copout for someone who wants to be light side, but also want to choke people and shoot lightning. Like typical grim anti-hero stuff.

The dark side being more like cancer or a drug makes more sense.

Rey and Kylo Ren were bordering that "Gray Jedi" bullshit.

Even The Clone Wars series was all "The Jedi are too arrogant" or whatever.

There are unaffiliated people that do use the force but aren't running around with lightsabers or masters of the force.

I think seeing some of those alien groups could be neat.

But you can't go around blasting people with lightning and pulling into dark energies and still be a super cool edgy good guy, that doesn't work is Star Wars.

Somebody mentioned Jolee, but he left the order because he wanted to get married and later became a hermit he was vehemently opposed to the sith and evil in the galaxy and fought against them, he just felt like the Jedi had departed from what should be done on some issues.

Jolee's an example of somebody I would consider a grey Jedi in the whole "I'm following the path of the light but not necessarily adhering to Jedi dogma" sense of the term, but that raises the question of whether or not somebody who isn't a member of the Jedi order can be considered a Jedi at all.

The problem with the grey Jedi concept is that it's definition is not nailed down.
