Ive seen people say its a top 3 game ever made, and has the best cast of characters in the series, and then ive seen people say its the worst game in the series, and that the cast doesnt even have a single likeable charcter.

I liked it. Though I can see how someone might not. I still don't know which one I like better between 4 and 5 though (the only 2 I've played)

5 has the best gameplay, but theres just something missing from it for me to put it above 4.

3 imo is the weakest of the modern formula, but its not bad. Tries a little too hard to be edgy that probably wouldve seemed a lot cooler when I was in high school. >_>

This. P3 was the entry that put Persona on the map outside of Japan and which also helped the series gain notoreity and greatly helped with the success of later entries. P4 is overrated as it did very little to stand out on it's own, or improve on P3's formula. Somethings about it ended up worse than P3 actually and it just mainly rode the wave that P3 started. P4 is not a bad game, but Atlus won't stop trying to shove it down everyone's throats because they put a whole advertising campaign of spinoff media behind it and want maximum profit. This already started with P5 and it will eventually end up in a similar position as well and is the reason we'll have to wait another half a decade or more for Persona 6.

It's the biggest deviation from SMT/Persona before and after. The story's a good bit lighter even counting the dark parts and a good bit more comedic in off times. It also had a good bit of marketing after P3's success making it an entry point for a lot of people. So it's mostly just a case of old vs new fans.

I disagree. 5 has a weaker cast and setting, and weaker story as well. WAAY better gameplay though. Sadly doesn't balance out.

Those are the one that's only played persona 5 and then call themselves a persona fan. But they never played 3 and 4

I loved it and have fond memories of it, but it was also my very first Shin Megami Tensei-related game.

The thing is, the tone gets pretty dark and so does the theme as you keep playing. People who hate on it get stuck at the beginning.

It's the worst from the mainline series I've played (3-5) None of the characters are all that great. 3 has my favorite team, but 5 is my favorite one overall, mostly because of how nice the presentation is.

It does have its dark moments, but until then, it was one of the few SMT games with an unambiguously happy ending, and combined with its overall lighter tone, it's easy to see why some SMT purists dislike it.
