The common example here is neanderthal DNA in Europeans but another solid example is Denisovan DNA found in modern Asian peoples. Homo erectus, one of the earlier/primitive species of humans, has been legitimately found in fossil evidence to have been around until at least 27,000 years ago. In historical terms, that's not THAT long ago. And fossil evidence is scant at best so that means it could've stuck around for quite a bit longer than that too. The Incan empire is the only historically known example of a 'great' civilization that didn't possess a normal writing system.
