Buddhism separates itself from Western spiritualities in a few ways:

  1. You are not born sinful or broken. Actually, you're born pure, perfect. You don't need something/one else to save you. You can do it by yourself.
  2. You are born perfect but have obstacles in the way that keep it from surfacing. Be it your ego, pride, impatience, etc. You struggle to access the perfection largely due to an unhealthy ego that is never satisfied. It always hungers more....validation, compliments, etc.
  3. You will never ever ever ever ever find happiness if it is conditional. "But X, Y, Z must happen then I can be happy." No, if you're not happy now, then you must learn to be.
  4. Start finding happiness by cultivating it yourself. It's just like practicing a sport. Don't practice happiness? Then you will be unhappy. Don't practice your craft? Then you will unskillful.
  5. One of the most difficult tasks is understanding happiness is very much a thing that is worked on, daily. When we are unhappy, we find faults, mistakes, negative energy to reinforce our mood. The key is finding the good daily!
  6. Start NOW. Write the best thing that happened to you today. Write it here and write it now. It has to have already happened. Once again, it cannot be a thing you will do later today or tomorrow. It must have already occurred today.
  7. Gratitude is a major link to happiness and well-being. Sure, seratonin helps, but so does seeing the beauty of each day. Gratitude, alone, can flip one's life around.
  8. You have more than enough conditions to be happy. It's just your ingratitude is powerful. It is another obstacle in your path. Don't forget, you're perfect at the core, but there exist many obstacles in the way. Let's add ingratitude to the list.
  9. Fight ingratitude by cultivating gratitude.
  10. Stop reading and write the best part of your day here.
Be well. Namaste :)

Literally proselytizing.

I once thought this, but all of my success was achieved through no human- not a monk, nun, Youtube sensation, etc.

A simple book, and then a series of books, helped pave the way for me.

Buddhism is probably the religion/spirituality least concerned with bringing anyone else in. Because, by nature of the teachings, less is more. Less desire is better.

You don't even have to become a buddhist to meditate or to alter thinking patterns.

You don't have to agree with the teachings of the Bhudda to reap the benefits of meditation.

It helped save me from a depression-like state. Probably only a mild form, but boy did it help! Took a few weeks, maybe months to change my mentality.

But damn, I am forever grateful.

I've only recently started meditating. I literally can feel the negativity leave my body. I'm even back to finding interest in my hobbies and becoming social again.

I've tried meditating. Just didn't think it was for me. But the mentality change I've undergone now permeates all of my relationships, especially the one I have with myself.

I recently read an article of a psychologist who turned to Buddhism to help her out of a divorce and other challenges.

She said, and I'm paraphrasing, that Buddhism helped to her adopt a motherly mentality in regard to herself.

What does that mean? It means that a good parent is both compassionate and understanding. Most depressed folk are neither (at least when it concerns themselves.)

She said it encouraged her to treat herself like she would her child, with tons of compassion and understanding.

I can lead you to water but only if you promise to help yourself. I, alone, cannot save another person.

I don't even consider myself a buddhist, just a spiritual person (who used to not be). But certainly I've adopted a lot of good from it!

It's like a psychology course about yourself lol

More discussion of Buddhism. Read OP.

Hey thanks man, super appreciate it - I was talking to this Yogi about Yoga in general and they said they had studied Vinyasa.. something like that. The Chakra system is really interesting but I am more so interested in the teachings of Buddhism and reading up more on that.

The best part of my day I guess was that I ran 5 miles after I did so yesterday.. I felt like I was gonna pass out from the heat but I willed on just to tantalize my body. I really, really, really, really didn't wanna do it but I woke up in the morning just frustrated I was even thinking that way and just went for it

Any material on Buddhism to read?

Eckhart Tolle, even though I never read him. He's a usual suspect in the spiritual field.

There was actually some pretty good stuff in the OP

Re meditation, I think its most beneficial for people who deal with lots of stress. You need to spend more time with your mind in the upper part of your brain (as opposed to in the front) to keep it healthy.
