He could have easily fulfilled the requirements of his occupation by arresting her for assaulting him, especially given the whole coronavirus situation.

It'd have been ill advised for him to do so but he would've been fully within the purview of his job to do so

Yea, its kinda scary that "look, he didn't beat or kill them!" is seen as noteworthy...Do you see a bunch of videos online talking about "check out this cashier ring up a customer, wish them a good day, and then help the next customer!"...No, because that's the basic level of expectations and not anything amazing. But Cops gotta be coddled for some reason.

Are we supposed to applaud an officer for not responding to taunting with state violence that has the potential to escalate to lethal force or with imprisonment?

You have a low view of officers yourself if you think this is anything other than the bare minimum. I don't get to just haul off on people that taunt me. We learn that in elementary school. But I'm supposed to fellate this officer and holding him up asking a shining example for doing what my Kindergarten teacher would have expected of me?

no one is saying you can't applaud a cop for choosing the profession and treating it respectfully. 2 things, becoming a teacher or doctor takes far more training and commitment than becoming a cop. And this is akin to praising a doctor for performing a checkup. its the bare minimum. You're not going to see articles or videos talking about "I went to the doctor for a check up. he checked my vitals and then i went home. LORD PRAISE HIM!", because that's the bare minimum. When we get to the point where people feel the need to praise that it means we have a bigger problem if the bare minimum is seen as incredible.

To be honest, our respective societies may be slightly different. Here, teachers are generally held in contempt and the role of parents in a childs education utterly ignores.

You should absolutely commend someone for doing a job well or as they are expected.

It's called positive reinforcement, and it can help a person feel appreciated and thus continue to correctly do their job, or even excell.

I never said anyone was saying that. In fact, i didnt really assert anything besides drawing an implicit parallel to other professions that tend to get public recognition

TheVipaGTS posted...

I am surprised that the amount of training is the differentiator for you - lots of professions require more training, but dont generally merit public gratitude.

I think i disagree with that analogy. Getting berated by a crowd without flinching, while part of the job description, is far from routine even for police. Theres also a threat to his personal well being that does not exist for the doctor.

@TheVipaGTS how do you feel about this analogy? ( and let me preface by acknowledging that it is imperfect, and that i probably faiked to describe the circumstances of the angry crowd without using any biased language)

A cop performing a routine speeding ticket without incident deserves recognition in the same way as a doctor performing a checkup (ie not really any)

A doctor performing surgery on a covid 19 patient deserves recognition in the same way as a police officer maintaining his composure in the face of an aggressive mob that specifically hates police.

Not sure what point you're trying to make. are you implying we shouldn't hold doctors who consistently do terrible jobs accountable? Because we do. Either way, that has nothing to do with what i said. Do you constantly see articles everyday saying "Doctor performed surgery. it went well"? No, of course you don't. You see it in special circumstances, but a surgery going well should be the expectation. There is also a huge difference in a doctor making a mistake and a cop being too emotional and letting things like this cause him to become violent.

I dont think thats it

Personally, i dont think i could handle the abuse that guy is getting. I dont think i would start shooting, but i do think i would either leave the situation or get riled up myself

I think there is a dissonance when you demand a huge amount of emotional fortitude from cops (as we should, they have a lot of power and need to show restraint even when its hard) while simultaneously brushing it off as unworthy of any praise at all.

It doesnt excuse cops who dont live up to those standards to acknowledge when someone does a difficult job well.
