Multiple reasons. He's an "auteur" like David Cage. He's not interested in making a game so much as he's interested in telling a story. Only difference is his games are good. People hate him because of the gender and identity politics he puts into his games. Not enough people care about the horrific toxic working conditions the developers work under to make a game for Naughty Dog.
