Healthy incisors, preferably from young, healthy donors, were necessary for transplantation. Whereas, teeth used in dentures could be either incisors or molars and might even be taken from corpses. If it's any consolation, every waking moment of Washington's life since needing dentures (and that's a strong word for what they were back then) was filled with horrible pain.

Wouldn't they kinda... rot?The part of the tooth that matters isn't living tissue it is mineralised, so in extreme cases of infection they can take out the tooth, clean it or the organic pulp and put it back in, presumably leading to less feeling.
