he's pretty dumb. and he doesn't even have good guests most of the time. for every 1 good/interesting guest he has (guys like Alex Honnold, Henry Rollins, academics) he has like a ton of lame comedians and mma fighters

It's better than the other podcasts, podcasts are fucking boring besides O&A. Everyone and their mother seems like they have a podcast and 99% of them suck.

Im not suggesting its an even split among types of guests. Like you said, he has on more fighters and comedians than anything else.

But he does also have his fair share or scientists, authors, musicians, political figures, etc.

JRE is a gift, IMO. Roganisms be damned.

I heard someone describe him as oprah winfrey for men. Never really watched oprah, so not sure if that's accurate.

Anyway, Rogan is cool. I listen when he has interesting people. It's just a couple of people talking and shit

O&A in its prime is like the greatest thing in existence. All comedy podcasts were pretty much born there.

Even if you don't like Joe, you gotta respect that he has 2 to 3 hour hangouts with guests rather than a 5 minute spot on a cable news network. Conventional news is dead. Joe wields more influence than Anderson Cooper or Maddow or Tucker.

I got into him in 2012 because it was a laid-back, funny podcast where a guy shot the s*** with his friends and occasionally talked about MMA. As he got bigger the appeal became more about the guests, since he repeats himself so much (making the banter kind of old). He's become unbearable lately for me due to his coronavirus opinions.

He was one of the first on the game and had the time to build up base - as oppose to some Youtuber who started it like 2 years ago despite having a large fanbase. That base is largely anyone with a slight interest in current topics, since Joe invite all kind of guests to show regardless of their political lending, education level, likability and whatnot. And folks just love to listen to people talk lol.

youd enjoy his most recent podcast with Bill Burr. Bill goes pretty hard on Joe during the first hour, about corona, wearing masks etc

He gives legitimacy to people like Alex Jones and Gavin McInnes. He can play the whole "trying to learn" card all he wants, but the second you give those people any sort of benefit of the doubt you're in the wrong. He's also the type of person to see something on twitter and assume that person represents millions of people's views in America.

To answer TC's question, he's popular because it's basically a daytime talk show for men

Hes not dumb but he loves to speak authoritatively on subjects that he basicallu doesnt know shit about. The dude will rant about issues like hes schooled on the subject when its obvious he basically skimmed an article on it 5 minutes earlier and previously never even thought about it.

That whole "Joe gives an audience to bad people" argument doesn't really matter at all. That opinion comes from blue checkmark bloggers and people that are still protective of the mainstream media regime. The mainstream news constantly gives legitimacy to all sorts of morons and bad ideas. Joe Rogan never sold a war to the masses. He never lied his country into a mess that they're still stuck in.

My problem with Joe Rogan

My problem with him isn't that he tries to act like a centralist playing both sides or that he gives a platform for "evil people" or that he enables dumbasses.

My problem with him is his fakeness for intelligence. He sure knows how to act like he knows everything and he's good at convincing others he's some incredibly smart person by confident articulate usage of words that goes along with his tone and assurance. With just these attributes he's able to catch something of a cult following. He's really good at selling himself as some enlightened ahead-of-the-curve kind of guy.

I swear this dude see's a headliner article about something on Insider Business and then does a quick 3 minute Google glimpse through about it and then acts like he has a lifetime education of said subject. His knowledge on shit are very surface leveled. Any great thinker knows the more you dig into something the more you'll realize you don't really know. He's the literally cover boy of what the phenomenon term is called "Gell-Mann amnesia effect".

In a speech in 2002, Crichton coined the term Gell-Mann amnesia effect. He used this term to describe the phenomenon of experts believing news articles on topics outside of their fields of expertise, even after acknowledging that articles written in the same publication that are within the experts' fields of expertise are error-ridden and full of misunderstanding. He explains the irony of the term, saying it came about "because I once discussed it with Murray Gell-Mann, and by dropping a famous name I imply greater importance to myself, and to the effect, than it would otherwise have"

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Michael_Crichton#GellMannAmnesiaEffect

I mean holy shit if he doesn't fit that description to a fucking T. How many times have this dude said "I've read an article about X subject and here's how smart I am now about it". Basically he just have really bad takes on shit and the sad thing is people eat his shit up. And I'm 100% sure he's aware of his own bullshit but he's got so many blind and loyal listeners now that he don't give a shit. I guess it's all about the hustle.
