Bare with this long list -

Movies (by release date): Footloose, This is Spinal Tap, Children of the Corn, Police Academy, Friday the 13th: The Final Chapter, Sixteen Candles, The Natural, Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom (uh... debatable), Star Trek 3 (?), Ghostbusters, Gremlins, The Karate Kid, Muppets Take Manhattan, NeverEnding Story, Revenge of the Nerds, The Terminator, Nightmare on Elm Street, Night of the Comet (come at me bro), Beverly Hills Cop

Pretty good music too: Springsteen - Born in the USA, Prince - Purple Rain, Bon Jovi - Bon Jovi, Tina Turner - Private Dancer, RHCP - RHCP, Metallica - Ride the Lightning, Wham! - Make it Big, Madonna - Like a Virgin ...guess you can debate music.

Couple solid TV premieres: The Cosby Show, Jeopardy!, Transformers, Who's the Boss?

the 80s were a great movies decade. there's a reason the time is viewed so nostalgically.

The 80's is not viewed nostalgically. That 80's Show only lasted 2 episodes.

The 90's and 70's are viewed much more nostalgically

Awww yeah, great year.

Lots of other good movies you didn't mention, though.

  • The Killing Fields
  • A Passage to India
  • Amadeus
  • Dune
Well...maybe Dune wouldn't go on the list, but it's still pretty enjoyable, haha.

But yes, it's a really good year based on what I've seen.

There are at least four cuts of the original Dune; I have two of them and I've seen three. It belongs on this list. :)

[ Lynch's Dune took liberties with the source material, but it's not as far out as Jodorowsky's Dune was going to be. ]
.

Edit: Let us not forget Top Secret! :P

If you like 'genre stuff' aka sci-fi/fantasy/horror, 1982 wins:

Blade Runner, Wrath of Khan, The Thing, Conan the Barbarian, Creepshow, the Beastmaster, Cat People, the Dark Crystal, Tron, Swamp Thing, the Secret of Nimh, the Last Unicorn, Poltergeist, Alone in the Dark, Basket Case, the Plague Dogs, Tenebrae

... and the movie that made almost all of them fail at the box office: ET

Not to mention things like Ghandi, 48 Hours, Fast Time at Ridgemont High, Night Shift, Tootsie, Reds, On Golden Pond, an Officer & a Gentleman, Pink Floyd's the Wall, Fanny & Alexander, First Blood, My Favorite Year, Things Are Tough All Over, Rocky 3, the Verdict, Victor/Victoria, the World According to Garp, the Year of Living Dangerously
