Favorite N64 game by a Japanese third-party developer?

In honor of today's poll I figured I'd do a more specific version, especially since the system didn't have many Japanese games that weren't first-party.

Used this topic to determine the poll options (left out RE2 & Mega Man 64 since I wanted to focus on the exclusives:

Ogre battle 64 is so slow that it's really hard to go back to imo but at the time I was in love with that game. Part of that, too, is how little verifiable information there was on the game in those early days of the internet. The game is so full of content (hidden and otherwise) that it really felt like a discovery when one of your dead soldiers resurrected as an angel or when a character joins your party your second run that you missed the first time.

Hard to recommend it today despite my nostalgia for the game though.

Voted for Mystical Ninja Starring Goemon. I said this a couple of weeks ago, but that game was THE 3D Zelda-type game before OoT came out. It was one of the most ambitious 3rd party games on the console.

Second would probably be Mischief Makers.

Those are ALL fucking great choices. But I gotta give it to Goemon cuz of how unique that game was.

How come all the other choices you lumped the sequels in with the originals except Mystical Ninja?

Bomberman 64

Great game, great soundtrack, and many hours having fun with friends in multiplayer battle.

The game made you think since you couldn't jump. It had some good puzzles.

I was disappointed with Hero when I first played it as it lacked the passion, look, and tone of 64.

It probably has the biggest played vs. owned disparity of any console game from 1997-onward, IIRC it only sold like 50k copies but it seems like a lot of people grew up with it.

Its a Konami franchise so RIP. But despite there only being four Goemon games to get an English release (one being a shitty Gameboy game) theres literally dozens of JP-only Goemon games if you havent tried any of those yet.

OBs problem isnt its speed (which isnt great), but how fucking easy it is. By the time you hit chapter 3, youre steam rolling through enemy units like butter. I wish it had been popular enough to get a remaster. At the very least, I wish N64 games were easy to mod and didnt need to basically be rewritten from the ground up. It is one of my all time favorites.

The series oscillated between different genres before & after the N64 was a thing. The first SNES Goemon game (a.k.a. the only one on the system to get localized) was an action/adventure title, while IIRC all the other SFC-exclusive Goemon games were 2D platformers.

Oh yeah i know the old ones are completely different, but my introduction to it was the N64 one, then i found out about the 2nd one and it was so different, like it wasn't bad, but it was also waaay harder at some points lol

Still prefer the first N64 one over the rest, loved the collecta-thon thing going on with it with the lucky cats, the characters, everything, though i do remember when i was younger, yae's waterfall thing took me HOURS, same for goemon's skill, those training missions to get the skills were fucking brutal.
