There's something to be said for games that can be finished in a couple of sittings, then played through again (often with multiple paths or outcomes)

Not every AAA game needs to be some 600 hour slog that you play through once and then never feel like playing again... >_>

Strongly agree.

But also there are more gaming options now too. The AAA game market is cannibalizing itself.

Basically everything from Sony 1st party is a one and done offering. At least with Microsoft they provide things like State of Decay, Sea of Thieves, Gears MP, Halo MP, Forza Horizon seasons and events.

of new releases this year I played Doom Eternal, Resident Evil 3 remake, and Nioh 2, all of which I found to be very replayable. In fact, I played through all of them twice in a row

Because a game that keeps you playing for 600 hours is SUCH a ripoff.

Give me a 5 hour campaign I can do two identical playthroughs with and without boobs!

There are literally games I have not purchased specifically because the playtime is too long.

Amen.

I have over 200 hours on Dead Cells, over 250 hours on Darkest Dungeon, over 400 hours on Slay The Spire (which I haven't even completed, currently Ascension 19 with Ironclad, the rest at around Ascension 10-12), and so on.

For the most part, yes. But there are still games with a lot of replayability.

Streets of Rage 4, for example. Loved it. Actually platinumed it. The game could be beaten in about 2-3 hours, and had multiple characters (and variations of those characters) to play through the game with.

The fuck? Thats on you and your compulsive behavior.

Do people really put that much importance on "beating" a game that theyd rather just get it over with?

There is too much emphasis on "play time" these days, and by that i mean, the open world, filler side mission bull shit is taking over and its all gamers seem to want for some reason. I look at a game as simple as the Crash trilogy. You could beat the game normally fairly quickly, or you could take time to get all the collectibles and 100% the game. If that same game was made today you'd have all these pointless side quests where Crash has to play mini games to unlock trophies. And that's another thing, Achievements. They're cool, but when doing pointless shit for an "achievement" is used to pad out the game and make it seem "longer" it just comes off as lazy and dumb...But gamers lose their minds over it for some reason.

Its like people mad that TLOU2 has like 12-15 hours of gameplay. 1, that seems fair. 2, I don't need a bunch of pointless extra missions that make the game 500 hours. If that 12 hours is fun and the story keeps me entertained I'm good.

Replayability is in the eye of the beholder. By the common definition, Ace Attorney games are in the bottom end of the scale for replayability, and yet I've probably played (the early ones) more than any other non-party game.

Are there any less than before? Stuff like Hitman, Witcher 3, Prey etc. still exist.

Personally I don't replay games as much as I used to in general because there's so much I want to play and I don't need to ask my parents for a new game like when I was younger lol

Idk. I replayed the new God of war like 4 times.

I think maybe some overestimate the replayability of older games. And I'm the last one to ever use the nostalgia line. But I don't think it is. I just think when you're younger you probably had less things to play since you yourself weren't buying the games. So you had to replay games or be bored.

I have no problem replaying most games if they're good. I find most resident evil games to be replayable.

Games like assassin's Creed aren't that replayable for me. I suppose that's your point. But I say it's only limited to those super large games with massive side quests and too many collectibles. Sometimes you almost have to do a lot of that stuff to be at a proper level to beat the game without going into a stress induced coma. There's gotta be a balance. I think God of war and the ff7 remake has that. They don't have too many side quests. And some of them are related to the story. Like the dress stuff in 7. But the main game itself isn't too long to the point where it feels stressful playing again.

In fairness I've played the original ff7 at least 30 times in my life lol. I'm really rambling here. I guess I half agree with TC. I think there are some examples where you're right but I also think people overestimate how replayable some older games actually are.

I don't even wanna know how anybody has the spare time to dedicate 600 hours to one game. You do you and all but endless fetch quests and/or game overs and/or running across the overworld doesn't sound like the way I want to fill a whole year.

No they are not.
Gamers often buy non-AAA games and the AAA game that gets ignored for the non-AAA game whine and complain that no one is buying.
