Has anyone asked Maryland if they want it back? BTW Virginia was asked in 1846 and agreed only after a referendum was held in the VA part pf DC.

The same I already do. That it is a federal district. It is one for a purpose. And that those wishing to change that are doing so for purely political reasons.

It sure exposes that representation isn't the issue if they would refuse the right to vote being part of Maryland again and being represented then.

A 2/538 share of national power would be fair based on population. But they would still only have 2/538 of the votes to govern their local matters.

So it seems to me that statehood is far more valuable than representation in Congress. Statehood gives you self-governance on local matters, while representation primarily gives you input on national matters.

But the rule seems to be, if the maps don't favor you, you're out of luck.

Regardless of whether your representative is of the same party as you, they are incentivized to be advocating for the interests of their constituents (say, for example, there's an earthquake in your district; they will advocate for disaster relief money). Correct. It is similar in status to an occupied territory, like the Philippines used to be or Guam or American Samoa or Puerto Rico. Congress is there to represent the 50 American states.

From the point of view of a DC resident, of course having statehood is better. But that's not necessarily the case for the residents of the other states.

The District does NOT want to be part of Maryland (again). Maryland does NOT want DC (back).

The residents of DC are beholden to members of Congress who do not give a FUCK about them. If some member of Congress (typically a Republican) gets a bug up their butt about something DC wants to do, there's nothing the people can do.

The very notion that things must continue to be some way because that's the way it's "always" been is ridiculous. Times and circumstances change and we must be adaptable.

I hesitate to call it a far-right conspiracy theory because it also has a decent amount of traction with independents, particularly in Black communities. I'd compare it to something like anti-vax which has broad reach across party lines for weird reasons. Only in this case it aligns with a main conservative focus.

And much like anti-vaxxing has some of its roots in the Tuskegee experiments, this one has roots in the founder of Planned Parenthood being a eugenicist (which was pretty much the style at the time). But it's an oversimplification that's been twisted out of control and ignores things like Black women having less access to abortion anyways which would disprove the entire theory.

Well Florida is getting almost 10k cases a day now... while Pennsylvania which was hit much worse early on than most states and took strong preventative measures never broke 2k a day.
