Carbonic acid leeches calcium from your bones and your teeth.
Artificial sweeteners wreak havoc on your endocrine system, including your pancreas (insulin regulator).
Sodium can cause you to retain fluids unnaturally.

Disclaimer: I drink multiple diet sodas a day.

The artificial sweeteners and other crap are worse for you than the sugar and other stuff they replace to reduce the calories.

Drink water... enjoy other stuff in moderation.
None of this is a problem until people go off the deep end with it.

"I drink a 12 pack of dr. Pepper every day, why am I obese?"

Common sense y'all.

artificial sweeteners has always been a point of contention:

ditch the diet stuff and just eat the "bad stuff" in moderation.

That said, both diet and regular are bad for you, just in different ways

Kidney stones are calcium deposits so probably not.

So is your argument that we already have a lot of chemicals in our body, so drinking more chemicals is fine?

Drink your soda if you want to, I don't care at all. You are asking why it's considered bad, my response was a chemical compound compared to water when you have two options for 0 calories.

You do you, not really interested in an argument, just stating facts.

True we have a lot of chemicals in our bodies, that's why we don't need stuff like protein, fiber, vitamins, iron, and various amino acids, right?

You can easily argue the reverse. The body cannot manufacture the chemicals it needs to live, the essential Amino acids. Water has none and diet soda has 1. Better to get your essential aminos, right?

This is the approach I take. I'd rather have one regular soda a day than three or four diet drinks because diet tastes like ass. The artificial sweeteners have a disgusting aftertaste that clings to the inside of your mouth.

I'm willing to sacrifice 150 calories so I can drink something that tastes good. I legitimately do not understand how people think that diet sodas taste better than regular aside from just "acquiring a taste for it" (drinking it until they get used to it). Some taste okay (Diet Mountain Dew and Sprite Zero are decent), but some are absolutely revolting (I refuse to associate with Diet Dr. Pepper drinkers).

Also, yeah, it's just not good for your teeth to drink three or four sodas, regular or diet, a day. One of my friends does that and wonders why her teeth are so sensitive/chip so often.

Aspartame in particular has in some way been linked to cancer, and apparently one of the ingredients is close to formaldehyde or something similar, mind you its very very low amount, so you'd need to drink a ton of it for the effects to kick in.

Diet Soda also contains a larger amount of Sodium, which causes you to retain water, also causes you to be thirsty more often, which can cause you to drink more than just a single can of diet soda. Personally, I drink regular coke when I'm at work and can't get access to water, Coke Zero if I need a caffeine boost, and just water when I'm home.

That's a lot when you consider it won't even satisfy thirst while making you hungry.

Might as well drink water if you're going to drink a tiny can and water.

Causes the diabetus. As that Harvard link mentions artificial sweeteners disrupt your reactivity to insulin, with increased consumption correlated with risk of metabolic diseases, including diabetes.

Sugar though doesn't cause diabetes, that's a total myth, although excess sugar can help make you fat, as an indirect risk factor. Either way just have some. Don't be drinking litres a day.
