Do you know how to drive a stick shift?

according to statistics, only 18% of americans know how to drive a stick..probably cause it involves more work than an automatic and nobody likes having to keep changing gears on a stick with their other hand when they can just worry about the wheel.

so do you know how to drive a stick?

You used to be able to get more MPG with a stick shift. Now computers are smart enough in cars so you get better MPG with an automatic.

That all said, stick does have one huge advantage nowadays. It is a great anti-theft device.

Drove one daily for 15 years. I miss the feeling but my daily didn't have a stick option and my wife drives the other car and feels more comfortable with auto.

Nope manuals are getting phased out. The only way to learn is to buy one and teach yourself or have a family or friend teach you in their car.

Convenient in that no one will ever steal it tbh. Otherwise I could take it or leave it over automatic. No biggie to timbo

This is the dumbest meme I have ever heard and dont know why keep saying it like its cute. If anything its just a 'friends/family wont ask to borrow device'

Only ppl who would steal cars would most likely be ppl who are into cars so they would most likely know how to drive stick and know what is worth stealing. Like for real, why would you even be a car thief if you dont know how to drive stick or know how to break into cars for that matter.

My first car was a manual. it is fun in sporty cars but living in a high traffic city, I wouldn't get another one. Newer automatics are now actually more fuel efficient and can accelerate faster so manuals don't have that advantage anymore. I do like that newer cars have brake hold feature now so the car doesn't drift back when stopped on a steep hill though because that was a con of manual. I think manuals are still more reliable and are much cheaper to repair if it does break also.

Oh Cmon. Drifting backwards just made it interesting.

I grew up in a pretty hilly city, and I always felt a bit of pride not having to use the e-brake method to get the car started without rolling backward. That said, I do remember a few e-brake starts in Seattle and San Francisco.

i have a manual currently, i can drive either - my pops has a automatic
i took my test in a manual (you have to test in a manual if you want to drive a manual in the UK there is a seperate test for automatic only)

i like a bigger engine with an auto but smaller engines tend to be poor with auto and some auto boxes are really bad

Yes, and I prefer it to an automatic usually. Doesn't go well in stop-go traffic, but when you can just drive; The stick is where it's at.

Plus, if you have to slow down in-front of a cop, you don't have to use the brakes if you down-shift.

Yes, when training to get my CDL. But I was terrible at it. Never got the rhythm down like most of the others did and almost failed becuase of it. Thankfully auto are if not almost completely phased out of most major trucking companys now.
