For all this time, the Chinese who have lived there, and others, had a taste of freedom, both economic and social, and they loved it. Then comes the heavy hand of Xi and the CCP to take that away. They riot, they revolt for months and months but eventually wear down under the force of "law" and soon become just another completely controlled city in China. Now they're being shot in the head with water cannons, and nothing will happen. That is sad.

I don't know if "sad in a way" is really accurate. It just seems sad in all ways IMO.
