Get a student card if you can. Those are the easiest to get.

And then specifically look for the Chase Freedom Student or the Discover It Student

That looks good, wish the limit was higher but nothing I can do about that.

Student cards are good. Otherwise I think your local banks card is a good starting point to built credit.

I looked that up and it says you need at least 680 to even be considered

My bank didnt have a score requirement. I think its because they understand people getting bank cards are likely starting out.

Capital One is probably the easiest one to get with no credit, or even not so great credit. They will likely start you with a $500 limit, try to keep your total balance under $200, or even a bit less. Use it just for small things like gas, or $20 here and there, and pay it off monthly with a bit more than minimum due. If you need to pay $25 by August 1st, pay $35 by July 25th. Just a bit more, and early. It will slowly help build your credit.

I helped my 18 year old nephew through this recently, no credit whatsoever, and he's in the low 700's already and got his limit increased and can get a 2nd card if needed.

I got denied a bank card, but probably because I requested an absurdly low credit limit.

Just apply. I had no credit score when I got the Discover It Student

But if you really have trouble you may have to get a secured credit card

Wow thats surprising. I always thought most local banks were happy to help get people started with credit cards.

Banks are much more picky than the shady shit that pops up in your mailbox for no reason.

Capital One Platinum is a good start. Use it like you would your debit card but don't spend past your means, pay off the previous month's balance entirely every pay period. Never carry over a past due balance or pay interest.

Just get the capital one. Put a monthly recurring expense on it (Netflix, Prime, Spotify, etc). Link to your bank account. Set automatic monthly payment of statement balance. Good to go.

Typically your bank offers a no-fee CC, that's how I started.

I'd recommend Discover It - that's the one I'm using now. No fees and 100% point match after your first year. My first year is almost done so I might consider getting a card with more rewards, not sure what I wanna do yet.

Didn't know you could set something like that. I've used my credit card and payed it off full every month then I stopped using it for a while till I decided to get a different one

Anything that doesn't charge you a fee. If you have no credit history you might have to get one of those cards where you give them a certain amount of money upfront to set your credit limit as collateral to show you can reliably make payments

Does anyone know any good resources for finding a card based on my monthly spending? My wife and I usually put ~$2,500 on our card every month

Nerd wallet is a good resource.

I personally try to avoid recommending credit cards and advise people to hit up a credit union. My debit card has rewards that rival most credit cards, and my credit score hasn't been an issue. This is assuming you have a good employment and income record
