In hindsight it was basically one big nostalgia trip for me, at least in the first half of the game. The graphics and music were excellent for sure, and the gameplay was actually a lot better than I expected and retrospectively I'm glad they went with it instead of turn-based, but now I'd probably rate the game a 7 whereas when I was playing it it felt like an 8-9

Did they ever fix the texture streaming? or should I just wait for the PS5 version?

I didn't have any problems with textures on the regular PS4

You're not playing on normal if you're just mashing square and thinking that works. Won't get you anywhere with mechs, the bosses, etc. unless you enjoy fights taking 525415142154165 times longer than they need to. Most everything else is fodder that is meant to die quickly anyway to give you the sense that your characters are getting stronger.

Found my answer:

https://www.thegamer.com/modder-finds-cause-of-final-fantasy-vii-remake-bad-backgrounds/

This means that each case of a low quality image unintentionally loading in would have to be addressed individually. The time and labor required for such a task relative to the difference it would make are more than likely unfeasible for Square Enix.

Unlucky. It looks like the best hope is for modders to fix the issue on PC.

ive stated numerous times that "most" fights don't require more than mashing attack then spamming Braver/Triple Slash. the bosses and a handful of regular mobs are the exception.

With all due respect man most JRPG trash mobs literally just take mash X on attack until dead. Its not something exclusive to this

It sounds like genre fatigue

a friend of mine brought that up. and you're both absolutely correct that in JRPGs most fodder mobs can be easily eliminated with nothing more than regular attacks. i struggle to explain why those entertained me but this does not, other than maybe my tastes have changed over the last 20+ years.

i used to make a little game out of min/maxing the damage i did per turn. so i'd learn the most efficient way to take down enemies with the least # of turns (ex: this one mob takes one hit from cloud and one from tifa to kill it, but that other one takes two hits from cloud, etc). i realize that i could do things like that to 'make my own fun' here. again, i struggle to explain why i just lack motivation here.

i honestly wonder if i would enjoy a SNES/PS1 era JRPG if i played it for the first time today.

The game didn't let me play on Hard or I would have. I think if the combat required more attention I'd have a lot of fun with it.

Then just wait until Hard mode is unlocked. Nearly all of your issues with the combat would go away.

Doesn't the game not let you do a true hard mode playthrough, though. When I finished normal mode it seemed my only option to play hard mode was to revisit specific chapters retaining my level and items. That concept doesn't really appeal to me, I would rather have a clean slate

Once you finish the first playthrough, you can go through the entire game again in Hard mode or just hand select chapters. You do retain your level but it doesn't mean much. You'll hit max level pretty quickly but certain bosses will still one shot despite how much health and defense you have. You cannot use any consumable items on Hard mode. Your MP only replenishes fully at the start of a new chapter. The game is more balanced around Hard mode because it's almost required to use the materia you've gathered from the first playthrough. Without Chakra, Magnify, Revive materia, etc., you'll have a pretty bad time. You also need to a fundamental grasp of how combat works as you can't spam square to win and you definitely can't spam magic.

I don't have this game but am I understanding correctly that you literally can't play on hard for your first playthrough, but people are still unironically giving TC shit for not playing on hard?

It's more so that TC wouldn't have these complaints about the combat system until Hard mode was tried. It's not a perfect combat system but a large majority of the complaints people have are only present on lower difficulties. You have to fight every encounter correctly as the TC would like on Hard mode.

The developers locked Hard mode to the second playthrough because Hard mode is balanced around already having certain materia at the start. A Hard mode on the first playthrough would be incredibly frustrating for over half the game as you don't have the resources you need to win unless you're a very skilled player. There's one particular boss exclusive to Hard mode who completely one shots the entire party without the right maxed out materia for example.

I liked it, but I didn't play the original.

I had some of the same complaints. I started skipping cutscenes toward the end.
