My fiance applied for unemployment at the start of April. She didn't hear from a single person until the end of last month. She called multiple times a week, and every time she was on hold for hours and hung up on.

The first person she heard from claimed there had been an error in the system and they never received her first claim, and she'd get no back pay.

The second person actually fixed the issue, and backdated her claim to late March when the shutdown started, and set up to have several checks sent to her.

We finally got the checks, and it's fucked up again. From the start there were two fewer envelopes than expected. Then there were abiut a quarter of them denied for various reasons despite having worked directly with someone for them, asking her to call the office that never fucking answers. And of the checks we did get, a full half of them are only a third of what they should be.

There have been multiple stories of unemployment failing to address things. Like, they set up emergency offices to take claims, but then only send them a trickle of applications to process and don't let them field incoming calls, so they're only spending roughly two hours a day working. This is fucking unacceptable and they need to be held accountable.

Emergency staff can have a bad impact on things as well. Theyre new and going to screw things up. Veteran staff has to take time to fix those mistakes. At some point they're not worth the trouble and it's difficult to actually figure out where that point is in the middle of a crisis.

It definitely sucks but there was absolutely no way for them to be prepared for this.

I'm accepting of mistakes. I don't expect perfection even on normal times. But this isn't a mistake, it's a complete failure of the system.

It's a system that had a huge sudden surge in demand. The system was never designed for this and to have done so would have been wildly inefficient for decades. Only the military runs like that.

That is atrocious and unacceptable.

I am rather surprised by the state as well.

I had thought oregon was one of the states handling this well.

Nah, Oregon has some amazing nonprofit services, but it's government social services are pretty awful. I got to deal a lot with Health share Oregon's medical transport service through work, for instance, and I wanted to strangle some of the workers.

My sister claimed online in alabama around late march and was approved like two weeks later(and received payments for those two weeks)

She had some issues with high traffic on the site when initially applying but got up really early one morning to beat high traffic hours and got her application through.

Really kind of surprised oregon would be more difficult to file an unemployment claim than in alabama....

The rat maze of unemployment is, in many cases, by design.
