I've just realised that I always gravitate towards engineering builds in various games. Even in bioshock I just enjoy hacking the bots and having minions.

Surely there's some kind of FPS or RPG game where combat/progresion is focused on being a good builder and not being a good shooter?

pinky, just because a game has some very simple customisation, doesn't mean that it's "engineering". You have to spend years studying for that, see?

Do you like puzzle/programming games?

Human Resource Machine and 7 Billion Humans fit those categories.

Would you like a First Person game with no combat but the game entirely progresses based on the knowledge you obtain? Play Outer Wilds (Not The Outer Worlds, two very different games).

Do you want a First person game also with no combat that has only one type of puzzle that gets progressively more difficult? The Witness is what you want.

Dungeon Defenders Awakened is the newest hot shit right now.

There's also a mode that disables your character can use building only. Very hard.

I should be a bit more specific. I don't mean puzzle games where you just build things to progress, like polybridge or sim city.

I mean combat/action/rpg games where you kill things and defend yourself using contraptions and upgrade your gear using machines etc. you make. Games where you base build.

In a lot of games there's an engineer class where you can do more of these things, but I don't know of any where that is the focus?

Subnautica was hot shit and I loved that, although I guess it's not technically a fighting game. Still, that's right on track.

Lot's of good suggestions here.

  • overlord. Never heard of those!
  • polybridge - not quite right
  • subnautica - perfect, but already played it to death
  • Dead Space - I'm intrigued, but terrified
  • Dungeon Defenders - is this actually good?
  • Factorio - doesn't fit the description but mind you it looks really interesting...

Ah I see. You're looking for "engineer role play" but not actual engineering. You might just want to make another thread, because there are enough games that focus on actual engineering to derail this one lol.

Closest I can come up with is Red Faction Guerrilla.

You're generally tearing stuff down rather than building or upgrading it but doing it efficiently requires you to direct your blasts, shots and hammer swings at strategic locations.

It's also fun as hell.

I generally hate this genre of games but love this one for whatever reason. Something about it just kinda clicks. The first one is super cheap so you can give that one a shot.

Sanctum 2 much bigger focus on shooting than Sanctum 1 so get that if that's what you want.

Torchlight 2 has an Engineer class, and Diablo 3 Demon Hunter with the Embodiment of the Marauder is largely turret-based I guess

I played the shit out of Red Faction Guerilla growing up. Combining the charges and hammer to bring down buildings is fun, but there's nothing like putting a singularity bomb in the first floor and watching the whole thing crumble
