The Washington Redskins American football team will review its name after calls to change it from big sponsors.

Last week, 87 investment firms and shareholders wrote to FedEx, along with fellow Redskins' sponsors Nike and PepsiCo, calling on the firms to sever ties with the Redskins, according to trade publication AdWeek.

As of Thursday, Nike's website did not display any Redskins merchandise. The Washington-based team was the only one of the 32 NFL teams no longer listed in the site's index.

I can't see it not getting changed at this point. The reason Snyder resisted the name change before is because Redskins merchandise as always been a big seller. But now that it is costing him money he'll let it go.

Fucking excessive. The name and imagery alone aren't racist. Slurs like "redskin" is racist.

Actually, the Redskins should probably change their logo to a weapon or tool, like the Chiefs have.

Not necessarily. I'm just saying that if you're going for a re-branding from your original racist name it's probably best to try to totally distance yourself rather than tweek it until it's just below a racist threshold.

Now that's an idea. Have a Native American group own the franchise. Honestly, the team needs an overhaul starting from the top, so even if they were incompetent, this would be welcomed

The explanation for why Frlunda HC goes by Indians (which they didn't even adopt until the mid-90s!) is fucking insanity.

Prior to the 1995/1996 season, the nickname Indians was adopted. This referring to the successful years of the 1960s, when fans started to call them the "Wild West" (Vstra Frlunda is West Frlunda in English). But as they didn't want a nickname like cowboys or something with firearms, Indians became the obvious choice.
