genuine question from someone who hasn't been paying attention to the traditional portable gaming market and got accustomed to using the switch for those purposes

Switch replaced it.

I figured as much. I'm trying to get around to playing 3DS games I bought but never played or got far in, as well as pick up some things on virtual console. The eShop doesn't feel like it's changed much.

I got a great big ol' scratch on my system very recently, which made me sad at first but then it dawned on me that these systems are made to get dinged up. Is-what-it-is.

Yes, if you can even find the sucker the only version you'll get is the 2dsxl.

It was basically on its way out some months ago, but not entirely official, just lowering production numbers to the point you'll now be lucky to even find a 2dsxl in the store.

It still has functionality/support (not really new games, rather it still connects/works) ofcourse, but who knows for how long. Even that is being wittled away last I heard.

They hardcore price dropped the 2DS XL just recently as well. Went from $200 CAD to $140 CAD.

The thing I hate about the Switch "replacing" the (3/2)DS line is that you cannot play those games on the Switch, both the Switch and Switch Lite are far larger than even the biggest DS line model, and the battery in both models is significantly worse as well.

At least with every other release the first models could still play the previous gen games, and the last 2DS/3DS models could play every single game ever released for the DS line.

3DS games are fading fast at retail. Meijer has been clearing out their remaining 3DS stock chainwide, and Walmart put the majority of their 3DS software on chainwide clearance as well. Target, Best Buy and GameStop have gotten in on the clearance action to a lesser extent.

I'd definitely shop around, there are amazing deals to be had.
