I kept seeing people online say that the ending was super controversial and didn't make sense and left no room for any further installments

Game was wonderful IMO

I thought that it was great, and I consider TLoU2 one of my favorite games to come out this gen, but if people didn't like it/didn't like how the story went, I get that, too; the game went in some directions that and took some chances that are pretty divisive:

  • Joel dying the way he did
  • splitting the game up as focusing on Abby for so long
  • controlling Abby while she brutalized/killed Ellie and her crew
  • having Ellie not kill Abby at the end
  • etc.
those aren't issues that I personally have, but they're a few that I've seen around.

my only real issue with the game is that I felt that it was a little long, but I appreciated the payoff at the end.

People mad about Joel being killed off
People don't like how Ellie acted at the end
People didnt like having to fight Ellie as Abby
People not liking Abby as a character in general

I think those are the major ones that most are upset about. I've omitted the bigoted answers.

Aside from pacing issues there are no legitimate criticisms. I'm done writing paragraphs debunking any BS complaints that don't hold water beyond personal problems and players not getting what they wanted.

So yeah TC. Game's fantastic. Hate for it is stupid. I'll debate anyone that says otherwise, but they'll disappear after I go into why their complaints are inaccurate like always.

A lot of the issues stem from pacing and how they decided to put the flashbacks/character switches.

Tbh I think the game could have ended at the farmhouse with Ellie contemplating going after Abby, but I guess it works now. Both characters went so far for revenge they were completely broken by the end. Ellie had a second chance with a family but she threw that away because of her guilt for not making up with Joel.

Didn't Angry Joe already hate the game after the leaks, barely paid attention to the cutscenes in the game and made other people play as Abby?

And yet people complain about journalists.

I personally felt that Joel's death was completely wasted.

Then the story of revenge for the revenge for the revenge of the revenge we revenged on was boring, and dragged on entirely too long.

Other then that, the game looked phenomenal and the gameplay was good enough. But for a game that was supposed to be heavy on story, it fell painfully short of delivering a good story. That's pretty much my biggest gripe with the game.

I really dunno how else it could have been done. Having him die mid game would've been weird.

I also strongly disliked Joel at the end of the first game, so I just saw it as a natural "your past catches up with you" thing.

I mean, when hatred and vengeance are the themes of the story, don't be shocked when they pop up a lot.

I mean, I know that's the theme... I'm saying I found it boring. They had this entire world to play with, with a cool virus/fungal thing, and they threw all that away to tell essentially the same story of revenge three times in a row.

It got old quick.

When they revealed the game was about Ellie on a revenge quest I did not ever think it was actually going to be for Dinah. That isn't Naughty Dog's style at all.

Their attempts to hide it in the trailers was still pretty obvious.

I thought the lore of Seattle was pretty interesting. Going into that hospital basement which was essentially ground zero was cool.

I dunno I didn't think the virus is ever going to be more than a backdrop for the human characters. That's the same thing in all zombie fiction. The quest for the cure ended in the first game.

I mean unless they're going to rehash the cure stuff, I don't know how the virus/fungal shit can carry an entire 20+ hour game unless they go for some hokey sci-fi story like "the infected are evolving"

My only complaint so far is pacing. I just started Seattle day one with Abby. Holy fuck does it take forever to get anywhere that is relevant to the plot. Like I love the world, the visuals are amazing. It's a less ash filled, all the plants are dying version of the road. But goddamn does it take forever to get anywhere. Trying to get to the hospital damn near made me want to quit the game. I get it, they want the world to feel huge and every building to feel fraught with danger but goddamn if that doesn't fuck up the pacing something fierce.

I actually liked how they included buildings that you didn't need to go into. Made the levels feel a bit bigger.

But yeah in terms of story pacing I feel like less people would be complaining if it wasn't split completely in half. Like they could've had you play one chapter as Ellie and one as Abby and go back and forth more.

I personally didn't mind it all that much but at times it felt like I played TLOU2, then started playing TLOU3

Yeah I get that. Ellie Day 3 and Abby Day 1 are probably the worst of it.

I think it's a big downside to this style of game in general. God of War was filled with it too.

I reckon the big thing Naughty Dog internally debated was how to split up Ellie and Abby.

I dunno. I think having them as two separate campaigns would have been better than how they did it. Especially with that cheap cliffhanger. That's my biggest issue with the game. It just felt a bit sloppy.

Having the balls to give you the option to play as Ellie or Abby after the prologue would have been good but I suppose that would ruin the Scars introduction.

One of the worst parts about this game imo is the lack of replayability.

Unless you're going for a no death run or trying a harder difficulty I don't see a reason to play through the story again, and there's noultiplayer which Uncharted 4 at least had.

I might lend it to some friends, but will probably trade it in at a later date for a different game, unless I feel the itch to play it again.

Yeah my big changes I'd make would be;
  • Make Ellie and Abby separate campaigns that you can play whenever you'd like
  • Make the flashbacks skippable for repeat playthroughs
  • Add some more gamey/arcadey modes. Maybe even like a scored thing. Sure it might be against the themes of the game but at the end of the day the combat is fun enough to support it and it's still a video game. It shouldn't be afraid to be one.
