it was a little juvenile one and flew off a trash can lid for about 1 second, then landed back on it. i can see why they don't fly often- especially big adults. i think some roach species' wings are actually almost gone because they just aren't good flyers

At least it was just a little one. Those bigass American cockroaches that are like 1 1/2 inches long are terrifying to see in flight :<

That's not even as big as can be.

I've literally encountered 2 seperate ones that were over 2 inches in the last week or so, one of which flew. The other decided it wanted to crawl across my bare foot.

It's not the big ones you should really worry about, it's the small ones. The big ones can travel pretty great distances due to flying, which is more of a controlled glide as even the 2-2.5 inchers can only make it about 8-10 feet starting from a height of 6. They can come from anywhere within 100 yards, possibly further. Added note: they're so big you can actually hear them crashing into the side of the house at night mid flight, sounds almost like an acorn being thrown.

It's when you see the juveniles in numbers you should start to worry, as they can't travel remotely as far and thus means a colony or eggsac just hatched nearby.

But yeah, even the best candidates of flyers don't do it that well. It's more of a "I'm above my target, time to slow fall to it"

To this day I think of the most terrifying experiences I've had with a roach is when it was slow flying at my face, but couldn't reach me as I moved, so I got a great view of it flying about 10 inches away for about 6 seconds. It too was one of the 2+ inchers.

You tend to just deal with them in the Southern US.

The first time I saw a cockroach fly in Japan I was pretty shook, not going to lie. That new Star Wars wasn't out yet, but I was basically thinking "they fly now!?".

Since we're in the subject of roaches and sleeping. I was curious once to find out if roaches could bite, etc.

The answer I got was "yes"
The reason being since they're omnivorous and seeking food anywhere, if you're asleep they might be brave or desperate enough to give you a nibble in your sleep. It's like how wasps might try to take a bit of your flesh.

Now you'll really sleep soundly.

The bites only hurt just enough to be annoying.

Speaking from expierence id rather have a roach problem than a ant problem. Roaches can bite but its atleast seldom. Ants seem like they gotta bite and damn living thing they touch.
