I think a fair amount of it is coming from people with a guard up due to their own insecurities. Its a mask to protect them if they dont get too much attention. Guys do it too but on dating sites most guys are trying to get laid so theyll settle for almost anyone.

high maintenance, left swipe.In general, this is the typical truth. It's part of why their type has to resort to dating apps to begin with. They often exhaust all of their options in person and local word gets out to avoid that person like the plague. So using apps is no longer an "alternative" for them; it becomes literally their only viable option... People who don't have these sorts of hang ups usually have good enough success without apps, because they have charm.
