Like the shit he was posting about aquaponics to that user asking, saying get a heater and set it to 80 and try to grow rice, well that destroys a $300 system, killing all of the fish within because you can't grow rice in an aquaponic system and fish can't live properly in 80 degree water. I feel like that's messed up to do to someone.

I don't know how to garden either. That's why I bought a house with like 100+ plants and trees on it.

2 years later I haven't unintentionally killed anything, but I've learned a lot. Still wouldn't say I know how to garden.

(I had a tree chopped down and replaced a bunch of hedges that didn't survive the winter)

There's a few ins and outs when it comes to vegetables, and even some fruits if you want to go that route. I have an apple tree but I do nothing for it, I like having it there because it attracts deer and I like seeing the yearlings every year.

I try new stuff each year, I have nieces and nephews that like to come help and they are super excited to see tomatoes and peppers grow from what they helped me plant at the start of the season. It's a good skill to have.

Are there any good (preferably indoor) tiny fruits that are pretty renewable? I want to have a self-sustaining source of food for my bulbul, but a lot of what I give it grow on kinda big plants, like apples, kiwis, mangoes, grapes, papayas, various berries, and bell peppers. Basically any fruit that's not too acidic. And the mentioned peppers lol.

I've got an odd yard for that. I have a 2 story garage/carriage home out back which casts a lot of shade midday for most of the year. There aren't a whole lot of spots that get a lot of sun without sacrificing the lawn. I also have a number of 20-30 ft tall trees for privacy that shade a fair bit.

Strawberries are doable indoors, you can get some indoor LED lighting that's heavy red/blue spectrum that they will thrive under, and they don't get very large.

Depending on the region and how much frost you get in winter, you could do a few fruit trees and it's virtually just water them twice a week if you aren't getting much rain and the leaves are drooping. Pears and plums grow well with lower light yards.

How long did it take your trees to start bearing fruit.

Ours took like three years, and the fruit was quite small.

Delicious, but tiny. Plum trees in this instance, I don't remember the pears every bearing fruit honestly.

Thanks, that's good because my bird is especially fond of strawberries and they're high in vitamin C. I've never been good at taking care of plants though, but I'll give it a shot. I think I tend to over water them though. Like the soil will look dry so I'll give them a few sprays each day to try to get it to soak down, but I think that's what kills them. And I feel stupid after, because I'm like 99% certain that I shouldn't be watering them nearly as much, but I can't stop myself <_<

Closer to 5 years, but it really depends on how big they are when you buy them and likely the water/sunlight they are getting. Initially the apples were just a big bigger than golf balls, but each year they are getting larger as the tree grows.

If the leaves begin to yellow, the are being overwatered, otherwise you are good. Plants like tomatoes you can seemingly just water over and over and it won't kill them. Drier leaves, little brown tips, they need more water. I have a saltwater fish tank calcium supplement that I used to use for corals and whatnot, and I put a drop of that into my gallon container before watering my house plants and porch veggies and i've noticed a difference. A lot of people like the miracle grow water additives also.

I've always felt like watering it a lot, until it starts pouring out the bottom is better than just a bit of water to re-moisten the soil. Stagnant, older water can cause root rot and mildew and molding on the surface of the soil. I good watering flushes a lot of that out.

Oh damn that's right, millet. I actually tried growing that for a while because of a funny accident. I used to feed my bird a seed mix (now it's just pellets and fruit).

So here's how it started...I must've accidentally dropped a millet seed on the ground, stepped on it, and tracked it into the shower. Because one day I saw a tiny plant sprouting out of the hair strainer lol. I transplanted it into a little container of soil, and it grew fast. When it was about 3 inches it seemed like it stopped growing, so I just plucked it and fed it to my bird lol.

That got me testing, so I tried to grow more, but I could never get any steady results. I tried soaking them in water since that first seed sprouted without any. Some grew a teensy bit, but would never show any real growth. Others I tried putting into soil, which got me success off and on, but for some reason, they just stopped sprouting after a while.

Yeah, maybe I'll try millet and strawberries. I'm sure I'll have better luck with seeds that are supposed to be grown rather than meant for direct consumption lol

Millet is a very hardy, easy plant to grow. Just a good sized pot, some potting soil, watering, and a bit of sunlight and it should be good to go.
