A read baby died, a real baby got taken and killed by a dingo. That baby's parents went to jail for murder because nobody believed them. They were pardoned in 1987

Jokes in TV shows -

• In "The Stranded" episode of Seinfeld (Season 3, Episode 10), Elaine does a mock Australian accent and exclaims "Maybe the dingo ate your baby!"
• It's the name of the band on Buffy, The Vampire Slayer
• In The Simpsons episode "Bart vs. Australia" (Season 6, Episode 16) Bart says to an Australian farmer "Hey! I think I hear a dingo eating your baby!" and again in episode "Lisa Gets an A" (Season 10, Episode 7) while Lisa plays a video game called Dash Dingo, the antagonist tasks the character with finding and devouring "7 crystal babies.

The joke comes off like they think she's lying about it happening. Like it's a far-fetched idea. A dingo really did eat her baby, and I don't think those writers know that.

And how makes a joke about a little baby getting eaten by a dingo?

Yes, but all of these were after they got a pardon. I mentioned that in my opening post

maybe they just didn't follow up with the story, and/or have a messed up sense of humor, where the family's trauma comes second to them

This was pre-internet days so they probably didn't care if they were lying or not. I guess the humor of it sounding ridiculous in an Aussie accent is all that was needed.

It's a very well known case with a not so well known resolution. In these situations the overall narratives often times overshadow the truth
Two other examples of this
1) The murder of kitty genovese is used as an example of bystander effect when it turns out, someone came to help her (the only person who heard her get attacked both times), but her wounds were too severe to make a difference
2) The McDonald's coffee lawsuit. The woman had third degree burns and had to get skin grafts. She was in medical treatment for two years after that.. Not exactly a frivolous lawsuit when you take that into consideration

They're making jokes about a real dead baby at the expensive of it's heartbroken parents who already wrongfully went to jail for doing it. How many kicks do you need to give them while they're down?
