Like I said, the first time I saw him deny it it was a straight up denial, "I didn't know they could control the weather"

Maybe in his mind he was making a nuanced point but that's not what it looked like to me. I don't think you can blame the holodomor on poor weather at all, but even if you do it's certainly not supposed to be a way to obfuscate what else happened...

<i>there was a drought. not just in the Ukraine. over most of the Soviet Union

stalin recognized that he would need more grain, so he attempted to buy grain from the kulaks (farmers and landowners). they burned their grain in response.

how is that stalin's fault?</i>

<quote>umber for Stalin also varies a lot depending on which deaths are counted. for example, the famine in the Ukraine, commonly called the Holodomor, is often falsely referred to as a genocide, and those deaths attributed erroneously to Stalin.

there are also greatly exaggerated accounts of deaths in the gulags (some of which record the number of deaths as being greater than the total number of people who were imprisoned in the gulags). to give some context: at the height of imprisonment in the gulags (during world war 2), the population imprisoned was comparable, proportionally, to the imprisoned population in the US today. living conditions and rates of illness and death were also not significantly different from prisons in other countries at the same time.

there are also exaggerations of the purges, both in numbers and intent, and it is virtually always ignored that the people targeted by Stalin were trying to dismantle the state. this is called treason, and most countries at the time had similar penalties for such transgressions</quote>

Again it's a little weird to have this conversation without him but essentially it was something like this:

Of course the actual Holodomor happened, what is contested is whether it should be classified as genocide, since for example kulaks would burn their own land rather than hand over crops, and a bunch of other circumstances.
Bottom line however is that Stalin was complicit and responsible, no matter if it's technically genocide or not.

A personal reflection is that it's a very similar situation to the Bengal famine of '43 and yet people are not so happy to condemn Churchill. I'm less interested in whether they're classified as genocides and more interested in consistency.

May I ask why, exactly? Whether or not you consider the Holodomor a genocide doesn't excuse Stalin's actions and serves to show a very concerning set of biases you espouse.

So, is this what happened or are you saying he made it up? Im not well-versed on the subject but if hes right and the farm-owners chose to burn their crops rather than sell it to help feed others during a famine (even if at a reduced price), then yeah I find that morally wrong of them.

This seems like he is dipping into whataboutism. Which doesnt excuse the Soviet Union but I can see why overdemonizing them without acknowledging other nations did the same is hypocritical. For example, Churchills policies led to the famine in Bengal ~10 years later that killed 3 million people.

Again, this is assuming all the information Joels presenting here is accurate. If youre saying its not, let me know.

It's a good question. I'll remember to ask him if he thinks the Bengal famine is a genocide. I don't really know his opinions on Stalin in general but you know it's possible to think he was bad and to think the Holodomor wasn't a genocide at the same time right
