Doesn't seem to complicated to me, based on Vol 1

You are new to the game, then "player killers" (PKs) try to kill you. Saved by some edgy god like guy. Flashes forward 8 months, you're a "PKK" (player killer killer) then the hacker guy kills you, sets you back to level 1. Then you have to restart. That's about an hour in

I think the anime shows what happens between when MC is new and the 8 months that follow up until he has to restart.

You don't. There's 8 games that came over to the US. The first 4 games, .hack//Infection, Mutation, Outbreak and Quarantine are a quadrilogy. The G.U. games take place 7 years after IMOQ do and there are some returning characters. The MC of G.U. is also a returning character from the IMOQ series. hack//Sign is an anime that takes place before IMOQ and .hack//Roots takes place before the G.U. games but you don't need to watch them to understand.

Honestly I think youll hate haseo in the first two volumes but becomes likeable in the third one and you realize how much he developed in the fourth game.

Yea story hasnt aged well for yhat game but enjoyed em for what it is. Hope they remake the other ps2 .hack games.

The myth of the Terror of Death proved way cooler than the reality.

Edit: I didn't want my post to have an entirely negative tone, so I'll add this: I thought one of the coolest things in the game was the rumors, stories and artwork other "players" would post about Haseo, especially when it was about events you yourself did in-game.

Not my favorite between the two series, but I was thankful the magic characters actually attack on their own in this game. Having to constantly go into a menu to use not only your own skills, but any magic character's magic in the first series really sucked and made me ditch them outside of story required dungeons and dungeons full of physical resistance monsters.

MC was a side charater in //sign he was a 9 year old roleplaying a serial killer. Not plot relevent to the game just fun info.

Yes everything transfers over to the next volume.
Not sure if you wanna get 100% but there are certain items you can only get in x volume.

Yes they do if you have a save transfer from the previous game

Should I be joining a guild? Can't seem to swap my weapons either, even if I have a few. Would choosing a class -> unlock that?

I really enjoyed the manga for these back like 10 years ago, it gets pretty ridiculous (in a great way IMO) when random players in this MMO can randomly summon magical god monsters to fight with - but only SOME of them, and they basically happen to be the main character and his new friends.

I also had one of the really old games that I got really into on the PS2.

I prefer the anime
