Not really, I didn't socialise much but that was down to being severely mentally ill from the age of 5. I grew up in areas where looking out the window and seeing a car on fire was quite normal. I was aware of drugs and sex, with my parents not hiding their involvement in either from me and books of bondage photography being around the house. My mother died when I was 14 so I've had more awareness of death than a lot of people at that age.

I was exposed to a lot of shit at a young age. Even before high school I'd seen up close and personal issues like alcoholism, drug abuse, domestic violence etc.

I was also out of school and working full-time at 17 and became a father 2 weeks before my 18th birthday.

Not really. My brother and I were the textbook definition of a latchkey kid.

She (mom) worked nights and I would have friends and girls come over.

My dad actually bought us booze when we asked.

It was an unconventional childhood but I look back fondly.

In one sense, yeah. I was never allowed out, or have anyone over. Mom was over protective, dad was ashamed of me. So I never really got to experience any of the world outside of home, the classroom, or work.

In other ways, not at all. The ones I should've been protected from were in my home. Was beaten, abused, constantly mentally tormented. Nearly died several times, and one attempted murder on me. My mental state has been garbage for most of my life, and honestly I'm not sure it's something I can recover from.

So, even though I was technically sheltered, I think I've experienced more than my fair share of trauma anyway. The actual sheltering honestly just feels like another layer of abuse.

My parents weren't overprotective, my dad bought me all the GTA games and my mom just watched me play them.

But I also didn't get out of the house a lot, most of my time growing up was spent playing video games, on GameFAQs (and later LL), etc. There were a couple years where I hung out with the kids down the street, we'd ride our Razor scooters around and that shit was pretty fun, but it didn't last long.

Was a pretty lonely childhood.

Kind of half-and-half. On one hand my ma was a religious nutjob, on the other I was essentially homeless for a while at 12.
