I'm not trying to equate it with Black slavery. It's one thing to be enslaved as a person and another to be selected for enslavement as a race.

I'm going to be honest though, I'm keeping that card in my back pocket in case it ever becomes relevant. In the 0.3% chance that somebody tells me that I don't know what it was like to be brought to this country in chains, I will say "My ancestor (name redacted) was brought to this country in chains."

<_<

Yeah. It does.

I'm of Irish descent and my family got shit on repeatedly but it doesn't hold a candle to chattel slavery. It was more shocking to find out my fourth-great-grandfather owned two people. That's a stain I'll never get out.

Context? Where youre from, etc? As some people have already said, it matters a lot. You would need to have a pretty strong case to argue that it is even close to the suffering of African American slaves in the US.

I already said it didn't compare.

And the treatment of Black slaves as we know it -- excess brutality -- was specifically done to keep White indentured servants in line by standard of comparison. "You got it bad, but at least not as bad as him."

Then White indentured servants were gradually phased out in favor of racial superiority narratives and slaves who could be subjected to the greatest of horrors without having any voice or any sympathy in society.

The way it was explained to me, the former was more accurate. So I don't quite know what that means.

My family getting a copy of one of my ancestor's wills and doing a first ever public reading of it at a family reunion only to realize that my ancestors owned 9 slaves was a peak awkward moment. People did not see it coming. Which I thought was naive given that he was an upper class white dude in Kentucky.

There was a public reading of a will?

Did you have to spend a night at a spooky house before you could claim your inheritance?

No this was like a ancestor from the 1700s. They just thought it would be a fun thing to do for a family reunion.

I personally think it is good that the family found out our ancestors had slaves. Obviously it is not the fault or blame of anyone alive but pretending that your ancestory is all clean does a service to no one.
