I'm going to be honest though, I'm keeping that card in my back pocket in case it ever becomes relevant. I'm of Irish descent and my family got shit on repeatedly but it doesn't hold a candle to chattel slavery. It was more shocking to find out my fourth-great-grandfather owned two people. And the treatment of Black slaves as we know it -- excess brutality -- was specifically done to keep White indentured servants in line by standard of comparison. "You got it bad, but at least not as bad as him." No this was like a ancestor from the 1700s. They just thought it would be a fun thing to do for a family reunion. I personally think it is good that the family found out our ancestors had slaves.
