Early French settlers had a lot of problems with a tribe of Indians called the Ilquois

France was engaged in a bunch of wars around this time, with the Spanish and British

Early settlers had to be Christian, specifically, Catholic

There was an extremely expensive canal built, the most expensive project ever of its kind at the time

Lots of Indians died from diseases brought by white people (like in America)

Much of the trading revolved around furs

There was a power struggle between the priest-elect and the political leader of the colony (this happens a lot in history)

By the end of the seventeenth century, only a slim section of what is now Eastern Canada had been colonised

Things were cold...so cold

By the middle of the nineteenth century, various factions were pushing for status as an independent state
