Quite a surprise. This is so unlike Republicans to do anything corrupt or dishonest.

Ohio House Speaker Larry Householder, a Republican, was arrested Tuesday morning on racketeering charges related to a $1 billion bailout of two Ohio nuclear plants, according to people familiar with the matter.

The bill that led to the bailout, which was funded by Ohioans through charges on their utility bills, was the subject of investigationslast year by local news organizations, which reported that Mr. Householder was instrumental in helping to push through the bill, which propped up two nuclear plants owned by then-bankrupt FirstEnergy Solutions Corp., now named Energy Harbor Corp.

The Federal Bureau of Investigation and U.S. attorneys office have scheduled a press conference Tuesday afternoon that is expected to provide further details about allegations related to a $60 million bribe to a state official and associates.

Also arrested Tuesday were former Ohio Republican Party Chairman and consultant Matt Borges, lobbyist Neil Clark, FirstEnergy Solutions lobbyist Juan Cespedes, and Householder aide Jeff Longstreth, according to a person with knowledge of the arrests.
A request for comment sent to Mr. Householders office wasnt immediately returned.

A subsidiary of publicly traded FirstEnergyCorp., FirstEnergy Solutions filed for bankruptcy in 2018 after competition from natural gas and renewable energy sources undercut the profitability of its nuclear and coal plants.

FirstEnergy Solutions tried and failed to obtain a bailout from the Trump administration. But lawmakers in Ohio intervened on its behalf. The new owners of FirstEnergy Solutions are getting a boost from a $150 million annual subsidy package enacted by Ohios legislature.

The legislation has been controversial in Ohio, where opponents to the bill sought a referendum and filed a lawsuit to overturn the subsidies.

This is Mr. Householders second time as House Speaker. He held the position from 2001 to 2004 and left office during a federal probe in which he and several advisers were being investigated for money laundering. No charges were filed in the case.

I wouldn't say every politician, there are probably some exceptions, but certainly every party.

The reasoning surely differs between parties. There's personal gain, of course, but the price differs and the cost of the people they represent changes.

I remember Jon Stewart did a whole bit after Nancy Pelosi commented on a corruption case and said that her party would never do anything like that where he highlighted 4 examples of Democrats engaging in corruption within either the last week or last month (including an anti-gun state senator who tried to sell guns to terrorists). Not to mention that one of CT's current Democrat mayors was previous convicted of racketeering the last time he was mayor... and got re-elected after he was released from prison (and then he ran for governor, and he was STILL better than the asshole who won the primary). Corruption is a bipartisan thing.

At any rate, what's not a surprise is that you only seem to highlight the party when a Republican does it >_>

The only truly honest politician in the last 50 years might have been Jimmy Carter and he was a terrible president.

  1. Not true. I made a topic about those politicians, Diane Feinstein included, dumping stock at the start of the pandemic, and remarked how they should all be in prison.
  2. Point out where I said only Republicans are crooked.

Yeah, which party is trying to kill minorities right now? Oh yeah, the republicans.

Regardless, both parties are killing minorities, although it's stupid to highlight minorities anyway instead of looking at deaths as a whole.

Sure, if you don't bother to ask any further questions and draw your conclusions off of one sarcastic post. You assume too much.

so you think its fine that there is brazen corruption and wrongdoing of republicans in particular at the federal level, just as long as you can declare both sides! when it comes to smaller state and local politics

No, my point from the start is I just don't trust any politicians.

Edit-I'm also not sure about that list you posted. The source quoted in the article is https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_federal_political_scandals_in_the_United_States but it doesn't seem to match up against this one https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_United_States_federal_officials_convicted_of_corruption_offenses but the fact that we have multiple articles to choose from is pretty telling on the state of US politics.

While you can conclude the contrapositive Q P from P Q, it does not imply the inverse P Q. That you would conclude otherwise says more about you than anything else.
