20 y/o Morgan Bullock from Richmond, Virginia became famous for her IRISH DANCING on Tik Tok as now right-wing trolls have accused her of CULTURAL APPROPRIATION!!

She has been performing irish dance routines for 10 years around the world as she showed off her skills to her legion of fans as now the world famous RIVERDANCE has invited her to perform next year in her state!!

Padraic Moyles invited her to perform with his troupe when they come to her state as she's seen dancing to various artists including Drake, Janet and Michael Jackson but has received a mix response from people who accuse her of appropriating irish culture

She said "I'm passionate about irish dance, teaching and my identity as a young woman of colour so the comments were quite hurtful. I feel like they've come from people who don't understand the term.Irish dance is like any other cultural art form, it was created to be shared. It's a dance that was born out of oppression, we can't lose sight of that. For me, as a little black girl, it was a beautiful art i was desperate to be part of"

She's been dancing since the age of 10 and performed it at her recital at dance school learning tap and ballet and now says it's her life. Competitions aren't that common in Virginia until she went to Dublin and London last year where she came in 43rd. It may not be an accomplishment but to be in the top 50 was a big achievement..

To her surprise HIP HOP worked well with irish dance choreography to help her get better and she will not give up on it no matter what anyone says as even the Irish PM has commended her

She can't wait to perform with Riverdance depending of the virus has subsided and now she is going to educate people on the dance and to inspire others in an uncommon dance form

I'm from Ireland and no-one would care. People would just enjoy seeing Irish culture spread around the world, and enjoy her talent.

I might be speaking too generally. But I've heard a lot of trash talk about Flatley, and about people around the world thinking all Irish dancing is called Riverdance.

Oh yeah sure, that makes sense - that's slightly different. Riverdance always sold out its shows in Dublin, but it's a contemporary take on Irish dancing. So I can see Irish people getting all "hurr durr, it's not 'traditional' Irish dancing" if they heard people equating the two.

As for Flatley, Bono, etc - generally it's kinda like family. You'll talk a little **** about your own, but defend them in the world haha

Well, that basically seems like what she's doing, considering she's appropriating the dances of another culture. And the outrage is about as stupid as with any other cultural appropriation claim.

I consider myself left wing and I always say I don't think cultural "appropriation" is a "problem" at all. The notion that certain people "own" cultures due to their DNA is frankly quite discriminatory.

The fanatics' insistence that "appropriation" only affects certain cultures is a joke too. Tons of cultures are featured in pop culture or are used as inspiration for fictional characters, yet only certain ones have a vocal subset of lunatics who wail and scream over "appropriation."

I couldn't care less that Japanese media uses Christian imagery for style or a cool factor, just as Greek mythology is often used in the West. Scandinavian stuff such as the inaccurate horned Viking helmets and fictional cultures based off of old Norse stereotypes are all over the place. Yet somehow something inspired by Native Americans is "appropriation?"

I also had someone say "you" didn't have your culture "appropriated." Oh please, going by the discriminatory policy of linking style and tradition to genetics, I actually have. A whole dungeon in the Xenosaga games is based on Ukrainian/Slavic mythology.

Of all the things to worry about, this is a non-issue. It filled me with glee when The Orville mocked this nonsense.

These lunatics have poisoned the word "problematic" for me. They are going to prop up the far right, and more on the left need to actively distance themselves from them. These extremists do not represent most that oppose right-wing tyranny and disregard for personal freedoms.
