Both Kefka and Locke have been hard booted so it's not Edward at least.

I could totally see Seymour snowballing to the finals. charon's dedication will keep him around until late; throw in some friend support and some genuine support and it's not farfetched at all.

eh I'm not saying THIS IS THE YEAR or anything, just that circumstances could exist. Like, maybe Chris decides one of these years that it's gonna be Seymour's year. Maybe the other frontrunners' fans manage to annoy the whole gauntlet crew. Maybe Seymour keeps getting teflon'd as a convenient finals goat.

But being able to land top 25s means that he's got that potential, as opposed to like...Layle or Mustadio who are never going to be within striking distance.

I can agree with this

theres something neat about supporting a character that would have never have gotten that far under normal circumstances. Even Fang, as much as we joke about that final, had a neat run despite never finishing above the top forty other than that contest

Replicate the run from XX + Chris in the mix pushes him further. Though I'm not sure how he got to 6th that time, I assume some people have dropped off hence the lower finish last year... but if Chris trades for it fully, Denzokuken comes back for the end game and MWC can avoid being banned there's top 5 potential. Then you need the fortunate elimination to free the hidden Seymour savers, I guess.

I still have the top 5 as:

Kefka
Squall
Seymour
One FF4 (likely Kain)
One FF7 (likely Aerith, though Tifa preferred...)

Though it always depends on who shows up and what elims happen along the way, of course. Edward didn't start being a "thing" for another like, 45 days. And Penelo still hasn't been booted yet, getting worried here...

Yea I'd say it's still too early to call a top 5, but hey I'd really like Squall there!

Squall top 5 is contingent on Auron/Vivi elims of course, so I mean... sacrifices!

It's way too early to predict, and likely any character you predict now won't make it there (welp). I mean outside of Lightning I wouldn't have predicted the last contest very well I doubt; much of what happens is chance and highly dependent on these early rounds. As you said, Edward didn't look great last time but he eventually got going with propaganda. Same thing with Cid P. Who is going to be that character this time? Chances are fairly high it will happen, and it won't be something anyone is going to be predicting at this stage. In fact, I'd say that ever since Tidus defeated Kefka in XVI every single contest since has had a major push from some unknown and unforeseen factor. From Steiner's win the following contest to subsequent runs by relative afterthoughts like Doomtrain and Minwu and finals appearances for historically weak characters like Cid P. and Edward, no contest since that one has been without something rather strange taking place. Any prediction I would make would include some sort of wildcard like the last 5 contests have had in the top 3 or higher.

As far as replicating the run in that contest goes, it's pretty unlikely. Some of the people that helped aren't here and if they are still here, they're not likely going to be interested in pushing the same character who now historically finishes fairly highly. I'm going to try and do my best, but if you look at the statistics on who makes it to the top 5 in the last 5 years, the odds aren't very good for someone with a placement history like Seymour's. I'd love to do some sort of witty comic or drawing but I lack the artistic skill needed for that, and without it I'm not sure getting over this hump is very feasible.

But I'd love to be wrong.

how about a Vivi/Auron/Squall top 3? We can throw Lulu in for 4 for good measure, and then maybe a Red XIII to round out the top 5.

You're definitely right charon, any number of factors here, not to mention lawyerings... who can resist giving a hot take though.

The mistake I make is I look at Cid P less as a joke character and more as a default spot for FF4 savers once the rest are gone. Which would be Kain this time (the classic tale of a character returning after a hard boot with a deep run - see Auron last year, Kefka in XX). Though he was a bit of a joke wasn't he... so maybe the hot take top 5 is really a hot take top 6 with the wildcard taking that spot (and then Seymour goes out in 6th again, lol...)

But yeah, so many variables...

Also since I missed responding to this earlier, got so lucky with day 1 of vacation timing, not banking of being so fortunate tomorrow:

Well, you'll see when you get there. Taking online popularity contests way too seriously, I'm really trying not to this year..

Also any predictions are, as noted earlier, way too early. But we've had Kefka plus an FF4 and FF7 character in the top 5 each of the past two years so hey, maybe past performance is indicative of future results here.

Oh I get taking things like this too seriously, it's just a bit of a surprise from the outside expecting a regular Save My and then seeing people get absolutely furious with each other over a contest that features a robot spider, a pet guard dog and Penelo. Again no judgment, I may well end up way too invested also, it's just a bit intimidating from the outside.

I guess I'd expect FF7 to do pretty well given the remake this year! And that they have like twice as many characters as any other game. Did any other game get its entire playable cast into the contest?

I don't think Rydia or Cid P have a realistic shot at making the finals (no solid primary support for either), so that narrows it to Cecil and Kain as your potential IV finalists.

Cecil would probably need the right opponent to have a shot, but I definitely wouldn't consider Kain a sacrificial lamb in that scenario.
