Indiana no longer in the running for me (have a hunch the reason it got so many votes is because it's the only non-Southern state in the list tho)
if you wanna live in the suburbs you can get some decent sized houses for hella cheap (compared to the similar sized cities across the states) in Georgia

Kinda depends what part of the state for any of them, but I voted Indiana because Ive lived about 45 minutes from the border in Ohio my entire life and my wife is from the state, so Im personally familiar with certain areas of it.

Something I love about the midwest is that a lot of it is really far west in the Eastern Time Zone, which means really late sunsets in summer.

Indiana gets a lot colder than those other states tho

Last time i was down there, the state-run liquor stores were closed statewide on Sunday, and only a few individual counties even allowed you to buy beer or wine in stores. Dunno about bars, not my scene. I found this out the hard way by shacking up in a motel overnight on a road trip, found the liquor stores all closed, and the county I had stopped in refused to ring up beer at all (but the fridges were still unlocked, those jerks)

Hell, half the other regular stores seemed like they didn't open up until noon. You can bet your ass that churches were open for business though lol

I'm a New Englander and I've lived in NoVA, living in Savannah, and have visited several areas of the southeast.

Savannah is really nice so far, pretty, and has a lot of culture. Everywhere on your list has hot summers, Georgia may last slightly longer but the trade off is 8 months of Fall (the best season). I'm really only familiar with coastal Georgia, haven't been inland yet.

I had a really fun time in NoVA but DC traffic and cost of living suck. But you're saying Virginia Beach which is an area I haven't been to yet. NoVA will get snow.

North Carolina has some really good spots, world class cities without the high ass cost of living that you find in NoVA. Depending on where you'd be in this state, it's probably your best bet. Raleigh is awesome, Fayetteville, not so much. You also have everything from the mountains to beaches here.

South Carolina has been a lot better than my ignorant northern bias would have been lead to believe. Most rural of all the states but a couple cities. Some really pretty areas and nice towns too.

The south really depends more on where in the states you'd be living than the states themselves (which is probably true about everywhere).

But because you're suggesting states:
NC>GA>SC>VA

It's so much cheaper to live in the south and I don't think the quality of life is that much better in the north east due to all the traffic in congested areas. It depends where you are though. There are reasonably priced areas in New England that aren't overly crowded. North Carolina seems to have the best mix and be the most developed of all the states mentioned or maybe Georgia.

Again though the nicest people I"ve met from all those places are from Indiana. Indiana has poverty and drug issues too but the people at least seemed to have their hearts in the right place.

The south is a lot of transplants now so there is a mix but even still something about the south seems so disingenuous to me. Even the north east is like this but it's more just blunt. The most genuine people I've met tend to be from the mid atlantic or mid west.

I'm not saying everyone from North Carolina is an asshole either but it sure seemed that way. It's not just the far right politics either. It's both. It's kind of a swing state with transplants and everything.

North Carolina has the worst educational system. Just something to keep in mind. It's main industry is banking.

If your main focus is cost of living and a decent balance people move to charlotte. You can actually build a nice life for yourself there although it seems a bit bland and boring. Places like Atlanta and Charlotte are hot spots because of he cost of living and what they offer. If you want to make your life more difficult and interesting you live somewhere else.

I think it's the opposite where they have it pretty easy down there and act like it's so difficult. They aren't the most educated or as nice as they think they are. Or compassionate. Schools and everything else it's easier to get good grades etc, etc. It's a banking city. It's a good place to live if you want to save money.

Indiana has real problems and I think the people there tend to be more compassionate. I think the south still has issues with fake and real compassion.

If you get multiple offers just compare housing markets and pay. (And I guess the surrounding areas entertainment options if that is relevant to you.)

The south isn't 100% homogenous but your general experience will be roughly the same, at least in the cities.

The north east is getting pretty bad with the cost of living and amount of crazyness that goes on. It's all happened over the last decade or so. I've thought about these things myself. I really don't know if I want to live in the south though. It seems like a bargain in comparison and nicer in ways but there are still things I don't like about it. I think the culture in this country is out of whack in general.

Really anywhere is cheaper than the north east except california. Liberal politics are overboard everywhere in these places.

That's what I'm doing. I live in Worcester MA which might as well be New Jersey. If it gets really bad I'll move to new hampshire or something. And it already got really bad. It seems to have simmered down a bit since the virus but housing prices are skyrocketing.

Connecticut, Vermont and New Hampshire are all somewhat cheaper. Worcester is way overpriced because it's connected to Boston. I grew up in Western MA which has gone up in price but is still is pretty reasonable. I never should have left there.

I moved out here for work and it made sense at the time because Worcester was still pretty cheap and there were more jobs as far as technology. I planned to just live here for short time. But crap happens and things went nuts around here and elsewhere.

i'll probably just go with whatever's closest, unless the rent is super expensive or the place is just that otherwise bad

my biggest concern at this point is that i've lived alone before and the isolation wasn't good for me. covid-19 stuff makes socialization a bit difficult, too.

It's good at being ruthlessly authoritarian/legalistic and having impossibly expensive property taxes/mortgages/etc.

There actually are nice parts of this state, but they're few and far between and I'm unlikely to find work there. I'm too soured on other aspects of living here to be eager to embrace them, too.

guess i'll give a general location list of the positions (should have done that awhile back, wh00ps):

GA: Atlanta area, Athens area
NC: Raleigh
SC: almost precisely on the border of NC and SC (not sure if that means anything)
VA: VA Beach (a lot of posters here frightened me about Northern VA, but i hadn't applied to a NoVA position recently if ever so hey)
WV: Both are in towns that by WV standards are populated (top 7 or 8) even if by other states' standards they'd be ordinary township sized. basically there's legit access to convenience stores and fast food and yadda yadda, not just staring at mountains all day

I live in Richmond and you should really look into it. It has a little bit of Nova aspects but the traffic is much better and there's still some southern hospitality here. Also it's a real big foodie place so if you like different cultures of food you'll love it. Big brewery/hard cider city as well if you're into that.

Personally I dont think there's much to do in VA beach and I feel like it's a little over populated for the layout of the city.
