When I put in a 5 hour stretch doing random shit in an open world RPG, I don't need to pretend my time was as well spent as it would be with any other hobby. I just enjoy it, and life isn't about maximizing your time efficiency if you don't want it to be imo. For me, I'm okay with the waste of time. I play them because I spent many years not touching them much during college, and at times not even playing them at all for just a few years until after grad school and serving in the Peace Corps. If anything, video games are a way to practice necessary escapism because of my niche and make me less of a weirdo. --- What starts with F and ends with uck? I hike, bike, and then train 3-6 hours a day in internal martial arts, and do a lot of old time strongman training similar to the old Charles Atlas program. He reminisces fondly about it on rare occasions, but hes also the first to admit that it was a black hole for his time, focus, energy and money. He spent way more than I did on that series, even though I loved that series too, but I agree it was ultimately fun but a waste of life, practically speaking. Bill Burr has talked about being so into Grand Theft Auto (not sure if it was 3 or San Andreas, maybe) that hed be thinking about it when hed be working or driving around.
