imagine having your regular season cut short while on a cold streak, while your biggest rival was winning every game they play. then, the league comes up with a gimmick playoff system, which puts you in a best of five series against a goalie more than capable of stealing three games. imagine, after four months, you get to play 4 games and an exhibition, and go home with nothing.

Uh yes, or else there is no point of a draft if they could just go where they want after being drafted.

They can play for their NHL team and request a trade, that's about the only option.

You'd have to sit out of the NHL for two whole years before the drafting team's rights expire. At that point, if you're under 20 you have to re-enter the draft, if not you're a FA.

For college players it's even longer.

Yeah, i'm not sure that has even happened in the NHL before though, and like mentioned above there's a 2 year waiting period. It would be career suicide for 99.9% of players to even attempt. Only thing that comes to mind is the Lindros scenario.

Well that's just it, 99.9% of players are just happy to be drafted, and know what an honour it is to get the chance to play. Like even a significant number of players that get drafted don't actually end up having NHL careers.

They could technically afford it but the reality is they just can't, it will impact their ability to sign anyone else long-term even while he's on his ELC. LaF would need a new contract to start the 23-24 league year and they only have 3 players currently signed for that year (McDavid, Draisaitl, and fucking Kassian lmao). So no defensemen, no goalies, and no idea what the cap is going to be. THAT'S a recipe for disaster.

Most teams only have a handful of core players signed 4+ years. It's not good practice for GMs to hand out term to everyone. Take it from someone who's seen a lot of bad GMs in his time. No one knows what the cap is going to look like then.
