Is this kid funny looking to you?

21 y/o Jonathan Michel, a soon to be 3rd year student at Yale has launched a federal lawsuit against the Ivy League University demanding his full return of his tuition after they decided to have ONLINE classes in response to the pandemic!!

The Ohio Kid said the prestigous university effectively breached or terminated the contract with students who paid for the opportunity to participate fully in the academic life.

It says "While the effects of the COVID-19 crisis are shared by all individuals and institutions across the country, defendant has failed to apportion the burden in an equitable manner or consistent with its obligations as an educational institution. Defendant has retained all tuition fees, related payments for the Spring 2020 semester, however all or substantially all classes have been exclusively held online since on or about March 23,2020"

He said he's lost access to key parts of his educational experience by having to take the classes solely online as a "remote learning options cannot replace the comprehensive educational experience" and calls online learning INFERIOR!!

Michel says the opportunity of campus living, school events, collaborative learning, dialogue feedback and critique were key factors he was missing out on..

He's hoping to receive some portion of the funds from the Spring 2020 semester that cost him 27,750.

Yale announced on March 10 that students needed not to return to campus as the lawsuit says they hope to launch a class action lawsuit for other students in the university

In response they say the lawsuit is legally and factually baseless and are prepared to mount a defense against him

Is this kid funny looking to you?

Fair enough, he paid for Yale access, not a generic education. Personally I think he should be refunded for the year and should reapply when corona passes.

Yeah the fact that universities across the country are charging people full price for the shift to online is such a scam. I would be so pissed off if I was still in school, moreso if I went to a university like Yale rather than a state school where the in-person teaching are definitely more consequential.

But if that is your attitude and you are paying more than 10,000 year for school, you are definitely doing something wrong.

Yeah. They should give them theIt money back. They didnt pay a shit ton of money to take online classes.

Also, I do get what MICHALECOLE Is saying. I mean, as long as you know you stuff, having a easy diploma (especially with the name Yale on it) could help you to get a job easier instead of like a community college. Not that community colleges are bad or anything...

That being said, I do think the kids who want their money back should get it. Or at the very least, part of it...

You're not paying for a superior educational experience at Yale. You're paying for the word Yale on your diploma and to be around other people who have decided to pay a lot of money on a status symbol. You have to learn to make connections in new ways, the jobs you're after will still be there after Coronavirus and companies who targeted Yale will still want Yale students.

In-person education is superior to online, because your education is barely about the course material.

People shouldn't get their money back. They had half a semester in-person to start meeting people. They finished out the semester and have had months to choose if they want to go to another school or not. Yes, it's after the deadlines for many school. No, not all schools. Yes, a world wide pandemic will cause you to have to postpone some life plans.

Universities have very commonly offered online classes as an option. They've always cost the same as in-person classes.

And they're not getting that. They also don't have access to campus resources, one of the major things Universities use to justify their fees.

They shouldn't get half a semester back as that was as advertised. After that they got sub-standard, and even missing, service. They gave the school time to rectify the issue and they did not. They'll have their life fucked with by these problems regardless, so why should the university get to keep the funds they haven't earned? Why don't they get postponed during the crisis?

They offer it, they don't bait and switch. If you got online classes then after you paid they said "sorry, you have to come in for classes. We've got your money now so take it or leave it, either way no refunds!" would you be fine with that? If you bought a shikansen green carriage ticket and the operator said "Here, have this overnight coach ticket, the train's not available, thanks for the cash!" would you not demand a refund?

Considering most of the value of an Ivy education comes from the connections built at the school itself and the substantial support network, he's 100% in the right. Even with a normal school I'd probably favor the student in a case like this because of the other intangibles, but an Ivy's true value mostly comes from the other intangibles.
