It was the original and the best. It also has strong ties to its roots which has let it weather a lot of the turbulence that hit JRPGs in the 7th generation of consoles.

Final Fantasy has seen rot creep in post-X due to Square Enix changing battle styles and gameplay engines between every single mainline entry. Even the familiar elements carry over in drastically different ways. Dragon Quest has maintained a specific aesthetic for decades, and its gameplay has remained classic during some of the most tumultuous times for the JRPG genre. It's like a warm hug from a familiar old friend in a setting where all your other old friends are strung out on the floor or smoking ice in the kitchen.

Even during Square's insistence that turn-based combat is outdated, the series has skewed heavily towards turn-based combat. The music is as pleasant as always, and the dialogue and plot is always earnest.

Honestly, one could argue that this began after 7. 7's style of game play and its battle system were not that different than 6's despite the shift to 3D, while 8 began the trend of making everything significantly more complicated.

This. It's a known quantity designed for a specific audience in mind. If you like JRPGs as a genre, then you know exactly what you're getting with Dragon Quest, and are likely to enjoy it.

I respect the fuck out of DQ because they don't make them very often anymore, but when they do, they stick to the formula that fans love. That's such a rarity in an era where every studio is trying their hardest to one-up each other and reinvent the wheel. Ironically, a developer saying "Yeah it's just like the older ones" is refreshing at this point lol.

It's relatively consistent and of a higher quality than most jrpgs. While I've come to the conclusion that Final Fantasy on the whole isnt very good, I think Dragon Quest is a very solid series that knows how to stick to its roots while being innovative in ways it doesnt get its deserved credit for. Final Fantasy in comparison more than innovative just feels like it gave up on being an actual series.
