I mean, I've completed it maybe half a dozen times, and had a lot of fun, but I've never got past about 550 Power Moons, out of about 900 Power Moons. This makes me feel like a bad person, or, much worse, a bad gamer.

It's a very strange Mario game, though. VERY strange. The other 3D Marios, I stay interested until at least three quarters of the way through the overall game, if not until the very end. Super Mario 64, for example, I really enjoyed pretty much every Star. The 3D Marios are generally extremely well designed, and they have plenty of content, but it doesn't usually become a chore. But Super Mario Oddssey wasn't like that for me, on my first and main file. I remember getting to about 300 Power Moons, which is about a third of the way through the overall game, and I was getting bored. Getting to 550 Power Moons was actually often really dull. I couldn't believe it. This - in a Mario game! I don't know how the hell people get every single Power Moon. Nintendo's approach for this game was seriously flawed. Instead of making sure all the content was interesting, they just jammed in as much as they could, with the belief that individual gamers would just stop playing when they get bored. This theory, which is often used in video game design, is certainly valid, but I don't know if it worked with this game...the sheer amount of filler. You can tell that the development teams for Oddysey and Breath of the Wild influenced each other a lot. Both games have collosal amounts of content, especially BotW, but a lot of it is just there to artificially extend the lifespan of the games...which wasn't neccessary in the first place. The Korok Seeds would be the best example of this, and have been widely denounced by gamers as a joke.

The formula is shitty. No legit levels, just vast hubs with small challenges sprinkled around. I fucking loved 3D World and Land when most people hate it because it's focused, streamlined, and has actual levels. I know there are portions of Odyssey's "kingdoms" (makes no sense to call them this) that are more like legit levels within the hub, but it's not the same. I'm not saying Odyssey's bad, but I just don't like collecting stars/moons as much as completing good old-fashioned platforming levels. 64 goes downhill regarding its levels quickly, and I lose interest, same with Banjo-Kazooie tbh

You're a better gamer than me. I finished Odyssey in around 15 hours, played a bit of the post-game, and never picked it up again.

I generally agree with what you've said. For how many moons there are, it feels like a lot less thought went into the level design. Sort of a quantity over quality approach. I don't consider Odyssey a bad game though. I enjoyed it more than Galaxy 1 and 2 for what it's worth.

Dont feel bad TC. I havent beaten a game this gen besides Uncharted 4 and The Last of Us Remastered (and technically that was a PS3 game). I own about 15 games just to give you context. So this includes RDR2, Jedi Fallen Order, Shadow of Mordor, Bloodborne, RE 7, RE 2, etc. Havent beaten any of these games in the 6 years Ive owned a PS4 :/

SMO is the only 3D Mario I can play. 64 aged like ass, Sunshine is ass, and the Galaxies are just boring.

if they had removed like 70% of the moons in the game and focused more on level design it would have been amazing. the movement is the best since Sunshine

i still have some issues with it but BotW can at least justify its amount of shrines and korok seeds with how enormous the world is. there is no such justification for Odyssey.
