my girlfriend's family has had the same couch for like 9 years now

i think its a little ridiculous to go more than 5 years without upgrading your couch, especially now that you can get them for under $2000, so anyone can afford them

I don't think so, Tim.

Why buy a new couch every X years? Why not when it wears out? Or if you can repair it and keep it, why not do that?

Uh you buy a new one when needed. Quality leather couches and even some tacky tweed (skint car salesman) couches can be 15 or 20 years old and in good condition. Unfortunately anyone who buys a couch from a place with barn in the title will probably encounter breakdowns of materials in the first 4 years

The only couch I've bought was from a thrift store, we replaced it with a $600 hand me down that was just.. awful, then got another hand me down to replace that which we currently have and love

Its a fabric 3 seater, 2 of them reclineand I hope we never have to replace it

Good quality furniture should last decades, depending on use frequency. Upholstery, padding , pillows , and matresses need periodic replacement ; but the framing should withstand all normal use.

My mother's couch is 40 years old and still in excellent condition. It is rarely used as she spends most of her time in the den.

I had a hide-a- bed couch for 20 years and sold it because we rarely used it . I have several 50 year old pieces of furniture still in good, usable condition.

My sister waits until a family member no longer needs theirs, and she fixes it up and keeps it. Its a good way to save some money. I only ever bought one, a nice leather sectional. So far it lasted 12 years, with some minor wear and tear. I am trying to get 15-20 years out of it.
