no and yes
studies have been done showing that yes genetics do affect how easy it is for a person to lose weight
but that just means they need to diet and work out longer and harder to drop the pounds and i can understand why that would be frustrating but not impossible

This depends on age. I couldn't gain weight using conventional methods until I was in my mid-20s. Before that, it really didn't matter what I ate.

Honestly barring some crazy illness, almost nothing is impossible. I gain weight really easy and losing is always tough. I have to really stick to my nutrition plan, but with discipline it is worth it. Nothing feels better than feeling healthy.

I've been trying to figure out why I haven't lost weight with light exercise almost daily and pretty much eating just fish and steamed vegetables for dinner, and coffee and a croissant for lunch.

Counted calories earlier this week and found out my usual breakfast was almost 1k calories >________>. Veggie patty 280, mozzarella cheese balls 140, avocado 300, mini veggie egg rolls 180, sugar free yogurt 120. It doesn't even look like a lot of food, fits in a small bowl.

No I mean, that's literally not true. People will eat pizza and ice cream one day then a single bag of chips the next day and claim they don't gain weight. It's all about diet.

if you eat less calories than your body burns, you lose weight. how is that a meme?!

Because the type of tissue you're losing is far more important than just losing any kind of net weight. You want to lose fat, not muscle and bone.

Or the flip side of trying a fad diet, losing a bunch of water weight, and assuming the fad diet is working - or it's already worked, you stop and yo-yo.

A "professional" athlete. Forgot a key word there, bud.

However, I won't make something up and I will say that I have trained clients at my gym and worked on their diets. Every single time when my clients "couldn't gain weight," it was due to lack of consistent eating. Every single time.

90% of the time people say this they think that decades of eating an excess of calories will be undone in 2 weeks of dieting.

Like I have more respect for people who eat like a whale and rarely exercise, but freely admit that they would be in better shape if they changed their lifestyle and habits.

There are probably a few extremely rare conditions that may make it several times harder for the person to lose weight. But anyone who legit says it is probably cutting out 200 calories per day 6 days per week and then binges an extra 2000 on their designated "cheat day" and expects to lose weight.

I've never claimed that couldn't happen, but as somebody who claims to have a knowledge of fitness and diet, you've missed the much more obvious tactic to take when attacking the claim that I've put in front of you, so I don't believe a word you say.

I was around 360lbs at my heaviest, likely more than that, before I turned things around and lost 140lbs in 2.5 years. I was once a defeated morbidly obese guy, resigned to a fat life and a fatter death. I've also interacted with and observed lots of fat family, friends, and lovers. I've been active in lots of weight loss groups with people whose situations were similar to (or more drastic than) mine before I lost weight but have also managed long-term, dramatic fat loss.

Based on all of these experiences, I would generally lead to lifestyle being the biggest reason, even when it came to people who did have a legitimate condition diagnosed by a professional. I'm not a doctor though, and I don't know the health profile of every obese person or what kind of undiscovered obesity factors exist out there. I'm also not going to say that weight loss is easy and everyone can do it.

Here's the thing though: it doesn't really matter if it's something they genuinely believe or just a convenient reason to throw in the towel.

You have to get your mind right to get your weight loss grind right and even if you merely think it's impossible, you were probably not going to get anywhere for very long anyway. I'm not trying to go self-help guru here but you do have to have some level of positivity. Actually, you don't even need that. You just need to not be mired in the negativity and defeatism that drags down so many overweight and obese people. Even if you don't believe it's possible to lose substantial weight and keep it off, you have to believe that trying is in some way worthwhile, at least long enough to start seeing results that show you what you're really capable of.

Genetics can absolutely make it harder to lose weight. Definitely can make it easier to put weight on. And genetics can certainly make it harder/night impossible to reap some of the VISUAL benefits of health and exercise (six pack abs, for instance).

But impossible? Those are the words of someone not trying, and looking for a reason not to try. Could be them being trapped in their own head (people struggling with obesity often suffer from myriad mental issues; food is one of the most common coping mechanisms for so many problems), could just be laziness, or anything in between. But its absolutely not impossible, whatever your genetics. There's whats impossible, and then there's what you are willing to do.

Source: myself. Someone who rolled quite poorly on the genetic lottery, struggled with anxiety and depression for 10+ years, and still managed to lose 150 pounds. It was a struggle; but when you resolve to fight for your life, you will amaze yourself with how far you can go when you're willing to go all in
