Which would you rather have regularly?

My roommates and friends and I want to have a dedicated game night this semester. Wed been doing trivia nights, but corona.

half the group wants to do a poker night, the other half wants to do a D&D campaign.

I dont have a preference. what should I vote?

If you're split half-and-half, and you don't have a preference personally, you should suggest a compromise where you alternate weeks. One week play D&D, the next poker, the next D&D, and so on.

Personally, I'd prefer Amber DRPG over D&D, but definitely RP over poker.

Though with my friends, if we ever managed to get a weekly game session of anything, it would wind up being M:tG.

... Both? Also gives the DM more time to prepare the sessions if you alternate, which is a good thing.

We cant do every other week because were not dedicated enough to remember stuff about our characters for more than a week lol also were just creatures of habit. Weve tried the alternating week thing before, and is wasnt great

Could also occasionally swap out a poker night with the occasional board game night. Larger groups can be fun for games like Dead of Winter or Betrayal at House on the Hill.

D&D would be my preference by a mile.

But i think switching off if the group's split is a good idea.

As far as I know, nobody ever left a D&D campaign with $800 cash and somebody's grandfather's wristwatch IRL.

Just sayin'.

You're clearly not playing in the right D&D games.

But you're also assuming they'd be playing for money. I can honestly say that, in spite of having played poker with friends dozens of times over the course of my life, we've never once played for money. Plenty of people don't.

(Though I HAVE played for clothes once or twice.)

Though you've actually raised another issue I wasn't even thinking about earlier. When you're playing poker for money (or even just for chips to determine who "wins" for the night), you're always going to wind up in a scenario where some of the people at the table get eliminated. Some long before others. At which point they're either forced to leave entirely, or are just going to go sit on the couch and watch TV or something, which can make for a kind of shitty game night where you want all your friends to stick around and participate.

Whereas with D&D, generally everyone gets to keep playing for the entire time (unless their character dies, but that's what rerolls are for). So you don't wind up having your one friend who's kind of bad at poker winding up resenting you because he has to spend 90% of the night not playing.

Granted, you could theoretically adjust for that by letting that friend get extra chips, or just playing casually with no betting, but that isn't necessarily fun for a lot of people, either.

I can't play poker for more than 20-30 minutes without getting bored out of my skull. I'll just start regularly calling all in on flops when I get to a certain point, as I'd rather just chill and watch a movie on the couch or something.

At least DnD keeps me somewhat engaged for the majority of its hours.

How against DnD are the half that want poker? I don't think it'd be that enjoyable to play with a bunch of people that don't like it. Poker on the other hand is easy to play more casually. You can drop out for a few hands to go do something else or miss a week entirely without any problems. I'd probably lean towards poker.

Course even if you didn't alternate weeks, you could just wind down a DnD session with some poker for a little bit. If someone isn't interested in poker at the time they could bail earlier and if everyone is feeling DnD that night you can just never switch to poker.

I actually played in a game like this once. We would sometimes get through the stuff the DM had planned faster than anticipated, so then we'd be like "let's go back to the inn and play poker." And then we'd play poker. In character. It was fun.
