I mean I consider myself the top Rufus fan on the board and to call Dark Nation iconic is... yeah, incorrect. No one was at all interested until the last couple of years SMFFFC wise, and this is a very old contest. This is a new fascination that will most likely, as all of these things do, not last very long after this contest (if there's even any interest by next year). Iconic characters don't need 16 years to debut and have interest lost in the span of a contest.

As far as Genesis, he's definitely not iconic because he makes all of his appearances in spinoff games. That said, he is at least a major character in one of those spinoffs (arguably the most liked/played one of them, and a game that probably propelled another character to win a contest). He's definitely not on the level of Dark Nation. Cissnei would be the next lowest because she's a supporting character in a sidegame. Jessie I'd rank far above all 3 though due to her treatment in the Remake. Not sure how she's even in the conversation with the other 3.

I mean I don't dislike him. He's cool, in theory and design I mean. There's nothing of substance to speak of but he looks cool and I like the idea of Rufus having a pet for whatever reason. My positive feelings on Dark Nation are all because of Rufus basically.

Same with Interceptor. It isn't really fun to see the dogs do better than their masters though, at least not to me. They just don't hold any interest for me without that main character they're attached to.

I assumed the change was because Dark Nation was supposed to sound like a 13 year old emo named him in Japanese, so localization changed it to something that sounds like something a 13 year old emo would name their dog in English.

Okay forget top savers by character, here are the top 3 characters still alive through Day 42 with the lowest number of saves from their top savers.

Alternatively titled, "The Ladies of Hour 3".

-Ashe: JonPen1416 with 23 saves

-Penelo: tennisboy213 and FBike1 tied at 15 saves apiece

-Jessie: StifledSilence, with 12 saves

Jessie's got the real communal saving effort going so far, looks like she has more savers with 5+ saves on her than any other character. Which could be a testament to her general likeability, but more likely the fact she's often hanging around at the end. But for how much longer...

The thing is that "Dark Nation" was deemed at the time, by you I think, to be a species. The remake is the "accurate" version of the game now, in terms of character names, and in that game he's called Darkstar. I mean... it really sounds to me like the reasoning to not call him Darkstar is pretty weak.
