yeah honestly I didn't grow up with it but I've played some of the more standard stuff through emulators/ports and the like, just looking for things I may have overlooked.

Lufia 2, and it is a crime that franchise just kinda...died. The attempt to remake it was haphazard, and really drove home just how insanely good Lufia 2 was.

The puzzles were great "without random encounters...THANK CHRIST*. The battle system was simple yet robust in tactical usage. But for me, the writing and banter between the characters was the right mix of gravitas and snark. You just didn't see that kind of back and forth sitcom-esque comedic dialogue from. JRPGs back then.

I think it also dove deeper into romance and interpersonal character relationships than one would expect.

Lufia 2 is a great answer maybe 10-15 years ago. Probably the best RPG on the SNES.

Word of mouth got it enough following that I would say it no longer applies here though.

I'd agree that Lufia 2 is vastly more cult classic than noone talks about anymore. One of my personal favorites was Uniracers here.

Also Dragon view, which 1. came out of nowhere in comparison to how uniquely unpleasent Drakkhen was, and 2. has one of the most amusing bugs to exist in a game (which caused the grand memory clobber)

NHL '94 yo
Truth
SNES NHL games were awesome, but especially on gamefaqs, nobody talks about them.

I had 96 personally.
Created entire custom teams (Before you could just make every player 99 overall...there was skill to crafting players) and ran seasons with a friend in multiplayer. It was amazing.

There were lots of open-world games on PC by then, including Sid Meier's Pirates! which Uncharted Waters is clearly inspired by
