Not sure entirely where the distinction lies between those two, but I know people care about making it.

I recently learned something interesting about that genre. it should be called BaMlikes

a game of the same type, predates Rogue by like 2 years called Beneath Apple Manor.

https://www.mobygames.com/game/apple2/beneath-apple-manor

Historical significance
Procedurally-generated dungeon games like this one are generally called "rogue-like", but this game was the first of its kind published two years before Rogue. The Apple II claims another credit for genre creation.

the only reason we call them Roguelikes is I guess back in the day, this game kinda went under the radar for most people and wasn't well known. But Rogue got popular. so it got the name of the genre. but it should really be BaMlikes

Roguelike - You gain/unlock nothing for upcoming runs
Roguelite - You unlock things that apply to future runs

Binding of Issac probably, but UnderMine is really, really good and climbing up my list of favorites. Also West of Dead is awesome.

I don't like that roguelike is applied to just any genre that doesn't save every bit of your progress.

That being said, my favorite game with that particular roguelike element is probably Sunless Sea.

I like Dead Cells and Wizard of Legend a lot. Really looking forward to Hades. Honorable mentions to deck builder roguelikes like Slay the Spire

couldn't be more rong. it's simply:

roguelike = ascii graphics, turn based, perma death.
roguelite = everything else, can be an action game or a turn-based game. must have perma death, may have meta-progression (this is when you unlock things during your runs that help you in future runs).

Not really sure either explanation is (or can be) 100% correct here. It's a label defined by a very loose community, there's no dictionary definition or board of Rogue directors or anything to lean on. Roguelikes are generally more similar to Rogue, whereas Roguelites use elements more liberally. Where the line is drawn exactly will vary depending on who you ask, and that's before taking into account things like labels on Steam and other storefronts

Tales of Maj Eyal doesn't use ascii graphics, and there's tile based forms of rogue too. It doesn't have to always be ascii, but turn based, grid movement and perma death usually fits the description of roguelike.

I won't complain about the roguelite description, sounds about right. Can literally be any type of game honestly with perma death, procedural generated maps, and maybe meta progression. You have schmups like monolith, to card games like slay the spire, to platforming action shooters like noita, to fps like tower of guns, to freaking megamanbattle network the roguelite like one step from eden.

All the above I'd consider roguelites, but not roguelikes.

I don't think I've played any roguelikes but have played a number of roguelites. Number 1 easily goes to Binding of Isaac.
