Should I get one as a kitten or one that's pretty much already trained?

Do you have a breed in mind or are you just going out looking for a cute kitty?

If you are getting a kitten you should get two. They have a shit ton of energy and they need to play with each other and socialize with each other, otherwise you're gonna be the scratching post all day and all night. And a lot of rescue places won't adopt out single kittens.

Otherwise, there's not much "training" you have to do - cats figure out litter boxes really early on, though you might still need to give them a quick rinse when they're small as they work on perfecting their technique.

I would also say if you're going through a shelter plan for worst case scenario of needing a full round of vaccinations, possible upper respiratory infection and possible worms, since these are all very likely. Even if the shelter takes great care of the animal, they can develop issues that won't be detected until they're already at home.

She's going to be a totally indoor cat.

That's good but indoor cats can still get adopted out with issues. Like some things just don't show themselves for a while. And some shelters don't do their due diligence - when we got our first kitten they rushed to get him neutered and then they were like "Ok here you go lol" - he had a URI, fleas, worms and a rash on his ear that needed treatment still -_-.

Our second kitten was in a foster home with a really good family, but she had ear mites.

And our most recent kitten has probably cost us upwards of like $3000 already between 2 upper respiratory infections, an ear infection and some other stuff (2/3 of that came from a late night emergency clinic visit because she was breathing weirdly and then they put her on oxygen therapy for two days). That was *after* we saw her at PetSmart - we reported she looked sick, the shelter took her to their clinic for *two weeks* and called and said she was ready for a pick up and she was fine for those first several days...

So anyway I really hope you don't experience any of these problems at all but it *is* really common.
