It had less to do with a change in global politics or even users growing up, but more LUE moving on to either CE or RI, and RI eventually collapsing and those people moving on to CE as well. The real difference here is that 10 years ago the average age on this site was like 20 years old, so naturally the conversations were at that level. So although people don't respond with as much "effort" the responses are more intelligent than they used to be.
